Late flurry drops Warriors
GIRLS' HOCKEY
Just one less minute.

The St. Cloud Apollo Eagles scored the last three goals of their Central Lakes Conference girls' hockey game against the Brainerd Warriors, including two in the last minute, to escape the Brainerd Area Civic Center with a 4-2 victory Tuesday.

Brainerd's Whitney Joyce opened the third period with a shot that whizzed past Apollo goalie Jenna Traut's left ear to give the Warriors a 2-1 lead.

But at the 3:59 mark, Joyce was called for interference to give the Eagles the player advantage.

Junior captain Anne Schleper took advantage as she connected on the power-play goal at 14:11 to tie the game and open the flood gates for two more Eagles' goals.

Kirsti Helmberger scored a goal

Both last-minute goals came from sophomore Lindsey Johnson, the last one coming with an empty net.

"It was a closely fought game, but all night we just seemed to be a step behind, whether it was breaking out or going to the net and hitting that forward coming through the slot on the offensive end," said Warrior coach Jim Ernster. "We were just sort of out of sync. You get those games throughout the season and we've kind of had a three-game funk now."

Kirsti Helmberger's goal at 12:06 of the second tied the contest at 1-1.

Goalie Kayla Helmberger finished with 23 saves.

"Not only conference-wise but section-wise this is hard," said Ernster. "We talked to the girls earlier in the week that it's kind of like climbing a ladder. Right now you have Bemidji and Moorhead clearly one and two and we lost to Elk River so we can't be above them and if we would have beaten Apollo we could have had a legitimate argument for a fourth seed, but we've lost to them twice now so there is no way that we'll get above them.
