The Norman C. Skalicky Foundation and the Central Minnesota Community Foundation announce that the $65,000 Help for Haiti Challenge has been met - bringing the total raised to help victims of the devastating earthquake in Haiti to more than $130,000.
The day after the earthquake, Norman C. Skalicky, chief executive officer of Stearns Bank N.A., decided he needed to do something to help the people suffering in Haiti. He stepped forward with a challenge of $50,000, which brought the matching fund up to $65,000 when combined with $10,000 from the Central Minnesota Community Foundation and $5,000 from the Brainerd Lakes Area Community Foundation.
"When you see so many people suffering so much, you just have to act," Skalicky said in a news release. "Thank you everyone for helping to make a difference."
Contributions to the Help for Haiti Fund will support five organizations: Project Haiti, American Red Cross-Haiti Relief, Partners in Health, Kids Against Hunger, and Friends of the Orphans. While the challenge has been met, the Community Foundation will continue to direct any additional donations to the fund to these nonprofits.
"On behalf of the Community Foundation, I want to thank the Norman C. Skalicky Foundation and the community at large for responding to this urgent need so quickly and generously," Steve Joul, president of the Central Minnesota Community Foundation, said in a news release.
