One injured after vehicle hits tree
LEADER - A 29-year-old Brooklyn Center man was injured Tuesday after the car he was a passenger in struck a tree on Highway 64, about a mile north of Leader in Cass County, the State Patrol reported.

Ryan Verwey was transported to Lakewood Health Systems in Staples. Information on his condition was unavailable Wednesday.

Verwey was a passenger in a vehicle driven by Max Parker. According to the State Patrol, Parker was driving northbound on Highway 64 when he lost control of his car, went off the road and into the ditch and struck a tree. Alcohol was a factor in the crash, the State Patrol reported.

Polar Plunge set for March 10

BREEZY POINT - The second annual Polar Bear Plunge for Special Olympics is set to go at 2 p.m. on March 10 at Breezy Point Resort.

The purpose of the Polar Plunge is to help raise funds for Special Olympics for training expenses, travel and other costs needed to support thousands of athletes.

The Polar Bear Plunge is a fundraising challenge to an individual or team, challenging them to dive into a cold body of water in order to raise money for Special Olympics. Last year 140 plungers braved the frigid waters of Pelican Lake and raised $37,000, all for Special Olympics. In addition, awareness was raised for the Special Olympic athletes, both adult and children with intellectual disabilities.

Registration will be from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on March 10 at the resort. There will be a costume contest, door prizes and D.J., Tyrone Blue, will be playing that night.

Plunge information or pledge forms are available at the Baxter Police Department, Brainerd Police Department, Crow Wing County Sheriff's Department or Brainerd Lakes Area Welcome Center on Highway 371. BHS cheer team takes sixth place in cheerleading challenge

The Brainerd High School Cheer Team recently took sixth place in its division at the Armstrong Cheerleading Challenge in Plymouth.

A total of 46 teams participated. Brainerd competed against six teams in its 3A division.

Cheer team coaches are Darcie French and Amy McCluney.

The cheer team, consisting of 22 girls, will compete at 9 a.m. Saturday at the state level at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.

BHS dancers win awards

Members of the Brainerd Warrior dance team were awarded all conference awards from their performance at the Class 3A section meet last weekend in Alexandria.

In jazz, dance captains Alexandra Clough and Katie Warren and dance members Emily Holland, Kelsey Villwock and Madi Hilborn were named all-conference. Taylor Rozinka and Jeannie Rudbeck were named honorable mention.

In kick, Rudbeck, Clough, Warren, Chelsea Doyscher and Kaila Eberhardt were named all-conference. Villwock and Holland were named honorable mention.

Dance tournament in Pequot Lakes Saturday

PEQUOT LAKES - The Section 3-1A dance team competition will be at 11:45 a.m. Saturday at the Pequot Lakes High School.

Teams competing are Pequot Lakes, Pine River-Backus, Wadena-Deer Creek, Frazee, Hawley, Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton, Bagley, Mahnomen, Pelican Rapids, Crookston and Sacred Heart.
