Schreifels announces Brainerd police officer will run for sheriff Staff Writer A second area law enforcement officer has announced his intention to run for Crow Wing County sheriff.
Troy Schreifels, Brainerd police officer, announced Thursday that he will run for the sheriff's position in the November election.
Schreifels, 35, is a 10-year veteran of the Brainerd Police Department. He said he is running for sheriff because he enjoys public service, especially meeting and working with people from throughout the county.
"This is an opportunity to broaden my service to the citizens of Crow Wing County," Schreifels said. He also said he is committed to public service through participation in community-based groups and volunteer organizations.
Schreifels said the current department is well run with an excellent staff and his primary goal as sheriff would be to be accessible to the residents of Crow Wing County.
If elected, he said he plans to work on crime prevention and education efforts with residents and community groups, listen to residents on public safety issues, expand his work with youth and educational resources and be visible and accountable to county residents.
Schreifels said he decided to run for sheriff about two months ago after he was approached by several people offering encouragement.
"The response has been overwhelming, which is flattering actually because it's the first time I've actually considered the idea," of running for sheriff, he said.
Schreifels has been a Brainerd police officer since 1996. He has served as an instructor for firearms, physical fitness, chemical agents and defensive tactics. He has served as a field training officer. He also has served on the Crow Wing County Child Protection Team, the Crow Wing County Tactical Response Team, Net VI Drug Task Force and is currently a school resource officer.
In 2002 Schreifels was named Brainerd Police Officer of the Year and Outstanding Law Enforcement Officer of the Year in Crow Wing County.
Before becoming a Brainerd police officer, he worked for the Breezy Point Police Department from 1991-1996.
Schreifels was an instructor in the Law Enforcement Skills Program at Central Lakes College and Hibbing Community College. He graduated from Brainerd Community College and received his law enforcement practical certificate from Hibbing Community College. He also attended St. Cloud State University.
He has served on the Brainerd School District Community Education Board and Long Range Strategic Planning Committee, the Franklin Junior High School Task Force, the Brainerd Community Action Board, Lakes Area Childhood Coalition and was the county coordinator for the Torch Run for the Special Olympics.
Schreifels and his wife, Julie, have two children, Serena, 9, and Evan, 7.
Crow Wing County Sheriff's Sgt. Todd Dahl last week announced his intent to run for Crow Wing County sheriff in November.
Schreifels emphasized he has respect for Dahl and current Sheriff Eric Klang. He said he will not be running against the two men but rather for the office of sheriff.
"All of the candidates have respect for each other," Schreifels said.
Klang has not announced whether he will seek re-election as Crow Wing County sheriff.
Filing for elected county positions opens July 5.
