DQ may open in PL BIZ BUZZ Senior Reporter A proposed $2 million revitalization project is being proposed in Pequot Lakes.
The Oasis Mall, along Highway 371 in Pequot Lakes, could be torn down with a Dairy Queen Chill & Grill with drive-through, liquor store, convenience store with bait and Laundromat going up in its place by spring with Sarie's Place restaurant no longer being part of the mall, the Lake Country Echo recently reported.
The Oasis Mall owners, Brian Laudenbach, and Sean Kaneski, speaking for Dairy Queen, spoke to the city council last week.
The Echo reported Kaneski, who is director of project development for Keupers in Baxter, approached Laudenbach, seeking property for a Dairy Queen Grill & Chill with a drive-through. Kaneski's wife, Lisa, and her sister, Kathy Martin, also own the Dairy Queens in Nisswa and Pine River.
"Laudenbach told the council that after looking at different options regarding the Oasis building, he and his company decided the best option is to tear down the entire structure. However, that will depend on the current tenants who still have leases, especially the owner of Sarie's Place, the restaurant.
Reported the Echo: "Laudenbach said he had already talked to the owners of Grooming by LaRee, Kyle's Salon and Studio by Design. He owns the former Fast Cash building behind the Oasis, and said that remodeled building could be a possible place for relocation.
"To ensure his investment, Laudenbach sought council support regarding the city's off-sale liquor licenses. He said at the Oasis Mall, the convenience store and Laundromat are not money-makers; the liquor store would be the business relied upon for profits."
Pequot City Council members amended the city's liquor ordinance saying the city wouldn't consider issuing a third off-sale liquor license until the city population is more than 5,000 people. The council also decided establishments with those licenses needed to be at least one-third mile apart.
The proposed redevelopment needs a conditional use permit. Should everything move forward, the building demolition may begin in March. New businesses could be open in May.
The Brainerd Lakes Heart and Vascular Center is now open in St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd.
When Kelly's Services, the temporary employment office, closed its Baxter offices in December, it was part of more than 150 branch closings across the country.
Customers are being helped through the Duluth and St. Cloud offices.
