Comments sought on proposed landfill expansion in Crosslake
CROSSLAKE - Comments are being sought on an environmental assessment worksheet prepared by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency for a proposed expansion of the Crosslake landfill.
People may comment on the EAW until March 1.
The landfill owner proposes to expand the facility into a recently excavated sand and gravel mining area. The 5.5-acre expansion would provide for continued operation of the demolition landfill.
With the expansion, the facility's draft permit, if issued, would allow for a five-year capacity of about 150,000 cubic yards of debris. The current amount of debris at the landfill is slightly more than 100,000 cubic yards. The landfill also currently includes recycling, municipal solid waste transfer services and brush burning.
The EAW, a preliminary environmental review looking at how a proposed project could potentially affect the environment, is open to a 30-day public review and comment period. Comments on the proposed project should be submitted in writing by 4:30 p.m. March 1 to Kelly Garvey, MPCA project manager, operations and environmental review section, 520 Lafayette Road N., St. Paul, MN 55155-4194, by e-mail to kelly.garvey@pca.state.mn.us or by fax to (651) 296-7782.
The MPCA will use the comments to evaluate the potential for significant environmental effects from the project and determine whether an environmental impact statement, a more comprehensive environmental review, is needed.
Copies of the EAW are available for review at the Crosslake Public Library, 101 First St. S.E., or online at the MPCA Web site at www.pca.state.mn.us/news/eaw/index.html.
People can request a copy of the EAW by contacting Mary Nelson at (651) 296-3516. Telephone inquiries related to the project should be directed to Garvey at (800) 657-3864.
