Benefit planned for Stork family
Staff Writer Crosslake firefighter Paul Nelson was one of several area firefighters called out to an Ideal Township home Jan. 23 because of a fire that claimed the lives of a father and his three daughters.
After witnessing the tragedy firsthand, Nelson felt he had to help.
Nelson, and a few other volunteers, will host a benefit fund-raiser and dance starting at 6 p.m. Saturday at Moonlite Bay Family Restaurant for Leslie Stork and her surviving family members.
Stork's husband, Stephen, 55; and three daughters, Tiffaney, 26; Sondra, 24; and Marcie, 17, were killed in an early morning house fire at their Ideal Township home Jan. 23. They leave behind Leslie Stork and her two surviving grown children, Jonathan and Kathleen.
A $1 cover charge will be donated to the Stork family, along with all money raised from raffles, silent auction and live auction. There will be food available, including brats and hot dogs.
Raffle tickets sold for $100 each may be purchased to win one of the following: A 2006 Chrysler PT Cruiser or Chrysler minivan. Only 300 tickets will be sold. The vehicle is offered for raffle courtesy of Suburban Chrysler of St. Paul and Steve Sands.
A second raffle for a Polaris 450 all-terrain vehicle will be offered at $30 per ticket with no more than 300 tickets sold.
Other auction items include packages for three nights at Heath's Resort in Pine River and at a Lake Of The Woods resort; several golf packages from area golf courses; an autographed Fender guitar coming directly from Sammy Hagar; autographed CDs from Jessica and Ashley Simpson; four airline tickets for anywhere in the United States; a stay in Cabo San Lucas; log furniture; Camp Snoopy tickets; and much more. There also will be $1 raffles for other items, such as DVD players.
Nelson, who also is a disc jockey, will trade off with "D.J. J.P." throughout the night, he said. He said he spoke with Jonathan Stork and he and his family may be there, too.
"It's going to be a big night," said Nelson.
Nelson said many people have said they plan to attend the Moonlite Bay benefit but first attend another fund-raiser being planned at the Jenkins VFW where Stephen Stork had served as quartermaster. The Jenkins VFW will host a pig roast and silent auction with music from 1-6 p.m. Saturday. All proceeds will be donated to the Stork family.
