Domestic assault suspect
to face charges CASS COURTS By MONICA LUNDQUIST Cass County Correspondent WALKER - The Cass Lake domestic assault suspect Cass County Sheriff's Deputy Robert Karbowski shot in the leg May 27 has been arrested on a warrant and arraigned in Cass County District Court on felony second-degree assault and terroristic threats charges.
Laurance Edward Krumrey, 48, was arraigned Jan. 31 and is scheduled for a Feb. 21 omnibus hearing.
Karbowski was the first officer to arrive in response to a call concerning an assault at a rural Cass Lake residence. According to the complaint filed against Krumrey, Karbowski went to the back door of the residence where he witnessed Patricia Morgan come flying out of the house and land face down in the back yard.
Standing behind her was Krumrey, who was carrying two cased firearms, the complaint states. Karbowski repeatedly ordered Krumrey to drop the weapons. When Krumrey did not, Karbowski retreated to an area near his squad car parked in the driveway, continuing to order the weapons to be dropped.
Krumrey went to his vehicle parked between the house and squad car and began uncasing one of the guns, while continuing to threaten to shoot Karbowski, according to the complaint. At that point, Karbowski shot him in the leg.
When Krumrey fell, Karbowski was able to take the guns from him. An ambulance was called.
Krumrey was taken to North Country Regional Hospital at Bemidji, where he was treated before being transferred the following weekend to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis.
Charges were filed against him June 8, but he failed to appear for court following his release from Hennepin County Medical Center. A warrant was issued for his arrest.
After a Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension investigation into the shooting, Cass County Attorney Earl Maus issued a statement June 7 that "the use of deadly force by deputy Karbowski was justified ..."
