What will they think of next?
Senior Reporter On the higher end, a vehicle can be programmed to report information back via a text message to a cell phone.
"You can have it call your cell phone if your kids are driving and speeding or if they go into a certain neighborhood," said Ben Larson, owner of The Sound Connection in Brainerd.
The car will report when it leaves home and when it returns. The technology threatens the old options of turning off the lights and coasting into the driveway to help conceal a late night out. The vehicle will also text message or e-mail maintenance reminders.
Vehicle owners can set up the parameters they want via a computer, Larson said.
If the vehicle is speeding, the text message it sends may include the time, speed and location. If the car is stolen, it can thwart criminals by sending a text or even a map of its location and refuse to restart once the engine is switched off. For an average vehicle, say a 2007 GMC Yukon, Larson said the two-way remote with the greatest distance and the CompuTrack costs about $1,300.
Larson said the CompuTrack is an aftermarket option similar to OnStar.
"I'm pretty sure it's going to be standard on most cars in the future," Larson said of the technology.
