CAREER Anderson, Scott join Brainerd chamber
Miranda Anderson and Jessica Scott joined the Brainerd Lakes Area Chambers of Commerce staff.

Anderson will serve as the communication and events director from the downtown Brainerd office. Most recent, Anderson was a marketing and business development specialist with Mid-Minnesota Federal Credit Union in Brainerd. She will direct member communication and networking encompassing printed and electronic forms.

Scott, a Crosslake resident, is an addition to the Crosslake and Pequot Lakes offices assuming the role of visitor services and event coordinator. A native of Rochester, Scott has professional marketing experience gained as a marketing consultant/project coordinator for an advertising agency. Her degree in retail merchandise, with an emphasis in marketing, was obtained at Rochester Community and Technical College.

Riverwood selects new foundation director

AITKIN - Shelli Urness was hired as Riverwood Foundation director at Riverwood Healthcare Center in Aitkin.

Urness, a Nisswa resident, will be responsible for fund development through special projects, annual campaigns and planned giving. Riverwood Foundation is a nonprofit organization designed to enhance high quality care of the Riverwood Healthcare Center patients and community wellness.

Before joining Riverwood, Urness was employed by Bremer Bank in Brainerd as a nonprofit resource specialist and spent most of her career working in project management, marketing and public relations in both the private and nonprofit sectors. She graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point and is enrolled in the master's degree program at the College of St. Scholastica. In addition, she has a mini MBA in nonprofit management from the College of St. Thomas.

West joins Riverwood as CFO

AITKIN - Jim West joined Riverwood Healthcare Center as chief financial officer.

For the past seven years, West was corporate controller for Apple Valley Healthcare Center, a long-term care multi-facility in the Twin Cities area. Previously, he was financial controller for Touro Infirmary Hospital in New Orleans and director of finance for HealthEast St. John's Hospital in St. Paul. In all three positions, West has had major responsibility for financial management and reporting, formal budgeting and preparation of financial statements.

West has a bachelor's degree from Minot State University in North Dakota. He joined the U.S. Air Force and then the Air National Guard for a total of 27 years of military service. He is a retired chief master sergeant in the Air National Guard.

Curell joins Hair & Beyond

Katie Curell, stylist, joined Hair & Beyond on Maple Street in downtown Brainerd.

Curell graduated from Scot Lewis School of Cosmetology in Bloomington in June where she was a Phase II advance specialist.

Robinson gains promotion

Melissa Robinson was promoted to personal banker at Brainerd Savings and Loan.

Her professional background is in banking and customer service with an educational background in accounting.

Klosowski receives specialist designation

LITTLE FALLS - Robin Klosowski, of financial services firm Edward Jones in Little Falls, achieved the professional designation of accredited asset management specialist.

She successfully completed the accredited asset management specialist professional education program from the Denver-based College for Financial Planning. Those who complete the program, pass a final exam and sign a code of ethics and disclosure form earn the AASM designation. The advanced training offers investment professionals the hands-on information needed to provide comprehensive financial services. Study topics include understanding the asset management process to understanding asset allocation and strategies.

McCall attends conference

Jackie McCall, optometrist in private practice at Midwest Family Eye Center in Baxter and in Staples, attended the Global Keratoconus Congress in Las Vegas in January.

McCall was one of about 400 doctors from 29 countries attending. Keratoconus is a corneal dystrophy affecting about one in 2,000 people worldwide, causing blurred and distorted vision.

Little Falls students compete in business

LITTLE FALLS - Little Falls Business Professional of America students have advanced to state competition.

Eight Little Falls students competed in business-related fields at the 2007 Business Professional of America region competition on Jan. 31 at Alexandria Technical College. Seven members advanced to state competition March 8-9 in Minneapolis.

Individual student placements were: Whitney Schultz, first accounting, third banking and finance; Steve Strack, first in financial math and analysis, fourth in accounting; Justin Piotrowski, second in banking and finance; Meagan Nouis, second entrepreneur, sixth interview skills; David Schuett, second PC servicing and troubleshooting, third information technology concepts; Brittney Rizer, fourth legal office procedures.

Hoge joins Natural Family Planning center

Barb Hoge joined the Natural Family Planning Center of the Brainerd Lakes Area as a fertility care practitioner intern.

Hoge will be teaching natural family planning to couples in the Crosby and Deerwood areas. Certified NFP instructor Pat Johnson will continue to work with clients at St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd and at St. Alice's Church Hall in Pequot Lakes.

Pieri joins Brainerd Savings and Loan

Tom Pieri recently joined Brainerd Savings and Loan as a commercial and residential loan officer.

Pieri, a graduate of Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota, is experienced in lending for commercial and mortgage customers.

Knopik earns fraud examiner certification

Larson, Allen, Weishair & Co., Brainerd, announced Christopher G. Knopik has earned the certified fraud examiner designation.

Knopik earned the CFE designation by meeting a stringent set of criteria in the areas of character, experience and education.

Knopik is a senior accountant in LarsonAllen's public service group. He is a CPA licensed in the state of Minnesota and is a member of both the American and Minnesota Institute of Certified Public Accountants and the Minnesota Government Finance Officers Association. In 2003, he passed his CPA exam and earned a bachelor's degree in accounting from Bemidji State University.

Nisswa at Night planned Feb. 22

NISSWA - Nisswa at Night, a networking event with the Nisswa Area Chamber of Commerce, is planned from 5-6:30 p.m. Feb. 22 at Nordic Living on Hazelwood Drive in Nisswa.

Appetizers and beverage provided.

Business After Hours planned in Cuyuna

CUYUNA - Business After Hours, a networking event with the Cuyuna Range Chamber of Commerce, is planned from 5-7 p.m. Monday at the Woodtick Inn in Cuyuna.

Lakes Area Young Professionals to meet

The Lakes Area Young Professionals plan to meet from 5:30-7 p.m. Thursday at Chef & Company in Baxter.

Business After Hours planned Feb. 20

Business After Hours, a networking event of the Brainerd Lakes Area Chambers of Commerce, is planned 4:30-6 p.m. Feb. 20 at Carefree Living, 2723 E. Oak St., Brainerd.

This event is free to chamber members and reservations are recommended. Advance reservations and cancellations will be accepted until noon Feb. 20. For more information, call 829-2838.

Long term care insurance speaker planned

Steven Pike, vice-president of sales for Newman Long Term Care in Minneapolis, will speak about long term care insurance options at noon Feb. 15 at the Northland Arboretum in Brainerd.

The event is sponsored by the Paul Bunyan Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. Lunch is at 11:30 a.m. The presentation and lunch are free for association members and $5 for non-members.
