Keeping Internet pros' off small lakes is a must to maintain good fishing
Outdoors Columnist Recently in the Outdoor News I read a letter from a guy in southern Minnesota who told people to keep quiet about fishing spots on the lakes in his area. He made a good point. Word travels faster than ever these days about good fishing spots.
Blame the Internet, and who the letter writer calls "Internet pros," anglers who hear about a hotspot on the Internet and then go there and hammer the fish.
Small lakes can't handle much fishing pressure. Sure, it's nice to let someone know where you had awesome fishing, but keep that information to yourself and you might have awesome fishing for many years to come.
On big lakes such as Mille Lacs it's not that critical. I don't like to pinpoint spots for the Internet pros, but if I reveal a few spots where I had good fishing it won't kill the big lake. It's a bit different for me because I work with a group of guides with whom I share my success, or lack thereof. And a major difference with my group of guides is that we all practice catch and release.
But other anglers who hear about a hot bite on a particular lake will hammer it until the fish are gone. Most anglers release at least some fish these days, but the more anglers who hear about a hot lake the greater the chance that meat hogs will show up.
I post information on the Internet, but I'm careful about what I say. And I'll never reveal when the fish are going crazy on a little lake. I've been fishing for most of my 39 years and I've seen major changes in the fishing world. The biggest change is upon us right now, and that's the world wide web. If you share all your hotspots you shouldn't complain when the fishing declines on the little lake down the road.
Q: Walleyedan, did you draw a turkey hunting permit this year?
A: Nope. I applied in both Minnesota and Wisconsin and went 0 for 2. But I still plan to buy a leftover license and hunt somewhere.
