A perfect time to be a mentor, valentine CHILD IN NEED
Have you seen the commercial on television recently where a young boy is telling his mother what a valentine is? He says that a valentine is someone you want to sit by, play with at recess, tell your secrets, and have fun with.
In other words, a Kinship Partner.
Kinship Partners has a number of boys waiting for a special friend/valentine/ mentor. Mark is a 9-year-old third-grader who lives with his mom and two younger brothers in southeast Brainerd. He is a talkative, friendly youngster who is looking forward to having an adult friend.
Mark has a wide variety of interests including sports, bike riding, swimming, woodworking, drawing, cooking, painting, collecting Star Wars pieces, playing video games and fishing. He describes himself as "A fast reader, I'm good at bike riding, I want to do BMX, and I wear glasses."
Also on our list is Tommy, a 6-year-old first-grader. He recently moved to Minnesota from Washington state. He currently lives at his grandmother's home with his grandparents, his mom and an older sister. Since his dad continues to live in Washington, Tommy spends limited time with adult males. His grandfather is in the household, but he suffers from many health issues and is not active.
Some of Tommy's favorite activities include camping, basketball, soccer, bike riding, skating, bowling, walking, fishing and playing yard games. He is a friendly and outgoing child.
Another boy on our waiting list is Max, a 6-year-old first-grader with a heart-melting smile. He lives with his mom, an older sister and a younger sister. His dad lives in another state and they have very little contact.
Max has an interest in "guy" activities. His favorite activities include bike riding, bowling, playing sports, four-wheeling, snowmobiling, boating, fishing, hunting, auto racing, woodworking and playing with animals. Max makes friends easily and is excited about getting an adult partner. He'd like his Kinship Partner to be "like a big brother."
Matching Mark, Tommy and Max with adult men who will be a consistent, responsible presence in their lives would make a great difference. Call Kinship Partners at 829-4606 in Brainerd or email us at mentors@kinshippartners.org. If you live outside the Brainerd area, call (877) 730-5437. Or visit www.kinshippartners.org.
