Minnesota Report

By Outdoor News

BEMIDJI AREA

There's some good-sized perch being caught on Lake Bemidji in 30 to 40 feet of water. The shallow perch action also has picked up in 16 to 20 feet of water on the north end of the lake. Northern pike are active along the 12- to 14-foot weedlines of Big Turtle Lake, Big Bass Lake, and the east side of Lake Bemidji. Tip-ups and sucker minnows are working best during the morning hours.

BRAINERD/NISSWA AREA

Shiner minnows are producing walleyes in 45 feet of water on Gull Lake and Round Lake. Northern pike also can be had on these lakes in eight to 14 feet of water with sucker minnows. The shallow weedlines on Nisswa Lake, Round Lake, and the Merrifield end of North Long Lake have started kicking out sunfish and crappies.

CROSS LAKE AREA

Pelican Lake and Crosslake are kicking out walleyes on shiner minnows or rattling spoons. Northern pike action remains strong with most fish being found along the weed-covered points. Mission Lake is turning out crappies on glow jigs and minnows. Trout action continues to be slow although anglers are saying they're seeing plenty of fish on their electronics.

GRAND RAPIDS AREA

Pool's Bay on Lake Pokegema started producing bluegills in 15 feet of water. You'll find a few active crappies during lowlight periods of the day on Trout Lake and Little Splithand Lake in 20 to 24 feet of water. Walleye action has been nonexistent, but you can count on the northern pike action to be productive. Find the green weeds on Bass Lake, Jay Gould Lake, and Big Splithand Lake and you should find northern pike.

HACKENSACK AREA

Hit Woman Lake, just to the right of the access, for perch and walleyes in 12 feet of water. Plain hooks and minnows have worked better than jigging techniques. Ten Mile Lake is providing the area's best sunfish bite in six feet of water. On Webb Lake, you'll find numbers of northern pike in 10 to 12 feet of water. Sucker minnows have produced the biggest fish.

LAKE MILLE LACS

East -- Walleyes continue to be caught, but there's more work involved. Do a lot of hole hopping in 28 to 36 feet of water on or just off the mud flats. Jigging spoons are still working better than setlines. Perch reports also have been sporadic. The best reports are coming from deep water, off main lake structure. The late morning and early afternoon hours have provided better numbers of jumbos.

West -- The Seven Mile Flat is your best bet for a combination of jumbo perch and walleyes in 32 to 36 feet of water. Sherman's Flat still is providing decent walleye action in 26 to 32 feet of water early and late in the day. Get away from the crowds and drill a lot of holes and you should catch fish.

LEECH LAKE

A few walleyes can be had during the evening off Cedar Point and on the humps in Walker Bay. Limits have been the exception, but the last hour of daylight is your best option. Perch and tullibee reports have been limited, and the panfish bite remains slow on the smaller lakes in this area.

McGREGOR AREA

Crappie action is still very good in Bellhorn Bay on Big Sandy Lake. Most of the bigger fish have been coming from eight to 10 feet of water. The area's most consistent sunfish action is being found on Aitkin Lake, during lowlight periods of the day, in less than 12 feet of water. Large sucker minnows continue to turn northern pike in 10 to 12 feet of water on Round Lake.

ST. CLOUD AREA

Northern pike are an easy catch in 12 to 14 feet of water on Pearl Lake, Pleasant Lake, and Beaver Lake. Look for crappies after sunset in 22 feet of water in Kron's Bay on Horseshoe Lake, Cedar Island Lake, and in 14 feet of water on Becker Lake. Sunfish also continue to be caught in 10 to 12 feet of water on lakes such as Pearl, Grand, East, and Becker.
