Cooking with herbs class set Wednesday LOCAL BRIEFS
The Northland Arboretum is offering a class called "Growing and Cooking with Herbs," at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Master gardener Orv Hastad will discuss growing and harvesting herbs, starting herbs from seeds and ordering herbs to grow in the seasonal garden. Hastad has been a master gardener for seven years and has been growing herbs organically for more than 20 years.
Sharon Wetteland, who has more than 10 years of experience as a professional chef and taught classes at Chef and Company and for various corporations, will discuss the difference between cooking with fresh and dried herbs and will prepare four dishes using herbs: pesto tortellini, pork skewers in lemon sage cream, thyme-scented rice pilaf and baby carrots with honey and dill.
To register for the class contact the arboretum at 829-8770 or register at the front desk from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Advance registration is required. Cost for arboretum members is $10 and $20 for non-members.
Women of Excellence awards planned
Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin Lakes and Pines announced the sixth annual Women of Excellence awards program will be June 10 at the Red Roof Inn in Brainerd. Reservations are being accepted now for the awards ceremony and dinner.
Women can be nominated in the following categories: Women Promoting Diversity, Women Preparing Young Women Today, Women Strengthening Our Communities for Tomorrow, Women Dedicated to the Girl Scout Way and Young Women Making a Difference.
Those who wish to nominate someone can request an electronic application.
All women living in the Brained lakes area who have not previously been selected as a Woman of Excellence are eligible for consideration.

Brainerd Auxiliary receives grant
The Brainerd Area Auxiliary to the Women's General Auxiliary, Twin Cities, received a generous bequest from the estate of Mary Ranning, a former member and officer of the Auxiliary. This grant will be used to support the work with children at the Shriner's Hospital in the Twin Cities by supplying toys, providing wheelchairs and addressing personal needs of children.
The Area Auxiliary to the Shriner's Hospital meets for lunch on the first Monday of the month at the Masonic Hall in Brainerd. Membership is open to anyone interested in this work with children.
Chamber meetings air on public access TV
The Brainerd Lakes Chamber leadership meetings in January were taped and are airing on local public access channels.
Eggs 'n Issues is airing on Wednesdays and Saturdays at 9 p.m. on CTC/Charter's television Channel 8; the regional transportation meeting is airing on Mondays and Fridays at 5 p.m. on CTC/Charter's television Channel 8; Positioning Your Business for Change is airing on Crosslake Communications Channel 12. Baxter Lions donate more than $85,000
Through various fundraisers and charitable gambling, the Baxter Lions Club donated more than $85,000 to area organizations and national and international Lions projects.
