Leap year tales sought
Staff Writer This year, Feb. 29, 2008, marks another leap year.
Have you ever wondered why we have leap years in the first place?
I've been known to Google things on the Internet so naturally, when given this assignment, I went online to find out why it is we get that extra day on our calendar every four years.
For the sake of keeping the explanation as simple as possible, the Web site www.timeanddate.com said leap years occur so our calendar is in alignment with the earth's motion around the sun.
Sounds like a bunch of scientific stuff I don't understand.
However, did you know that having five Fridays in February last occurred in 1980 and, after this year, it won't happen again until 2036?
Do you have any interesting stories or facts of leap years past? Any memorable birthdays, weddings, etc.?
I want to hear about them. E-mail me at delynn.howard@brainerddispatch.com or mail them to DeLynn Howard, Brainerd Dispatch, P.O. Box 974, Brainerd, MN 56401. Include your name, age and where you're from.
Deadline is Feb. 26. We'll print a sampling of your stories on Feb. 29.
