A look at who was surveyed for project
Who responded
Survey respondents covered a wide range in area communities.

- Employment: Most had jobs with 60 percent of respondents working. Twenty-six percent were retired and 2 percent were students. Small percentages worked at home raising a family, were permanently disabled, unemployed or laid-off.

- Education: 29 percent had a high school education or less, 42 percent had some college or technical school education, 29 percent had a college degree or above.

- Race: 97 percent of respondents were white. American Indian, Asian/Pacific Islander, and Hispanic each made up 1 percent each, 2 percent were other.

- Gender: 63 percent female and 37 percent were male.

- Age: 30 percent age 35 to 49 years, 25 percent 18 to 34 years, 23 percent age 50 to 64 years, 23 percent age 65 or older.

- Income: 13 percent less than $20,000; 15 percent $20,000 to $30,000; 24 percent $30,000 to $50,000; 24 percent $50,000 to $75,000; 12 percent from $75,000 to $100,000; 9 percent $100,000 or more; 3 percent don't know.

- Marital status: 67 percent married, 2 percent separated, 10 percent divorced, 8 percent widowed, 14 percent never married.

- Children: Households with one or more children were 41 percent. Households without children accounted for 59 percent.

- Type of resident: 98 percent full time, 2 percent seasonal, 1 percent weekend.

- Residence: 86 percent own their home, 14 percent rent.

- Expectations: 95 percent expect to be living in the area in five years, 5 percent do not.

- Communities: Respondents by community included, Baxter 12 percent, Brainerd 45 percent, Breezy Point 2 percent, Crosby 5 percent, Crosslake 3 percent, Cuyuna 1 percent, Deerwood 3 percent, Lake Shore 1 percent, Motley 3 percent, Nisswa 6 percent, Pequot Lakes 6 percent, Pillager 1 percent, Staples 8 percent, Other (outside the area) 4 percent, Don't know 1 percent. Two people responded from Bay Lake and Pine River. Single respondents participated from Emily, Garrison, Ironton and Lake Hubert. One refused.

- Participants were grouped into six regions for analysis: Brainerd/Baxter, Cuyuna Range, Pequot Lakes area, Crosslake area, Nisswa/Lake Shore area and Staples/Motley area.
