LOCAL BRIEFS Crow Wing County DFL convention is March 1 in Baxter
BAXTER - Crow Wing County DFLers will conduct their county convention on Saturday at the Forestview Middle School in Baxter. Registration begins at 8:30 a.m.
The convention starts at 9 a.m. Delegates and alternates elected on caucus night have been mailed delegate letters inviting them to attend. Delegates will vote on resolutions presented at the caucus, adopt a revised county unit constitution and elect 11 party unit directors (five officer positions are not up for election this year).
State Central Committee members will be elected. Delegates will also be elected to the Eighth Congressional District convention in Duluth on May 3-4 and the DFL state convention in Rochester on June 7-8.
While only delegates may vote all area Democrats are invited to attend this event. There will be a catered lunch at 11:30 a.m.
Several legislators and candidates are scheduled to attend including Rep. John Ward, DFL-Brainerd, Rep. Al Doty, DFL-Royalton, Sen. Mary Olson, DFL-Bemidji, Meg Bye, a candidate for House District 4B. Representatives from U.S. Senate and presidential campaigns are also expected to attend.
Rep. Jim Oberstar, D-Minn., is scheduled to speak at 1:30 p.m.
Friends of Library accepting donations
Friends of the Brainerd Public Library are accepting donations of books, CDs, DVDs and audio books for the spring used book sale on March 28 and 29.
All proceeds benefit the Brainerd Public Library. Donations may be dropped off during regular library hours.
Family of Christ students in Jump Rope for Heart
BAXTER - Family of Christ Lutheran School in Baxter held its fifth annual Jump Rope for Heart event on Feb. 8. Twenty-four students in grades kindergarten through seventh-grade collected pledges and jumped rope that afternoon.
The money raised is given to the American Heart Association.
Working Family Initiative Forum planned March 4
A Working Family Initiative Forum on Child Care, Child Health Care and Wage Issues is planned for 6:30-8 p.m. March 4 in the Koinonia Room at First Lutheran Church, 424 S. 8th St., Brainerd.
Included will be a discussion of what happened regarding child care, children's health coverage and minimum wage during the 2007 legislative session and how you can get involved. People may share their personal storioes.
The event is sponsored by Child Care WORKS, Children's Defense Fund Minnesota, JOBS Now Coalition, and local sponsors that include Brainerd Lakes Area Early Childhood Coalition, Brainerd Public Library, Bridges of Hope, Central Lakes College, Child Care Resource and Referral of the Otter Tail Wadena Community Action Council Inc., Crow Wing County Health Department, Crow Wing County Licensed Child Care Association, Crow Wing County Social Services, Minnesota Rural CEP and Tri-County Community Action Inc.
