Bomb threat
Three Forestview Middle School students suspended
Three Forestview Middle School eighth-graders were suspended from school and arrested Thursday after a bomb threat note was discovered in their classroom.

Brainerd Superintendent Jerry Walseth said the bomb threat was written on a note that a teacher discovered in a classroom at about 11:50 a.m. The teacher notified a school administrator, who discussed the serious nature of the note with all the students in that classroom.

Three eighth-graders - two 14-year-old boys and a 13-year-old girl - later claimed responsibility for writing the note, Walseth said, and they were removed from school Thursday and suspended from school. The Baxter Police Department arrested all three.

Baxter Police Chief Jim Exsted said the three students are being held for terroristic threats at Central Minnesota Juvenile Center. He said formal charges are pending with the Crow Wing County attorney's office.

"We take bomb threats very seriously," Walseth said. "It was a prank, but it was a costly prank from the standpoint of those three students."

Though the bomb threat appeared to be a hoax and the safety of the students and staff at Forestview Middle School was not at risk, Exsted echoed Walseth's statement that the incident was considered serious.

"Even if it was a hoax, which we believe it to be, it's something both the Baxter Police Department and the school district are going to take very seriously and we want to send a strong message that we are going to take a strong stand against it," Exsted said. "We're not going to allow it to happen and that message needs to be loud and clear."

Walseth and Exsted commended the quick response of Forestview administration and staff in the case. Walseth also said he appreciated that the three students stepped forward and took responsibility for their actions.
