Lakes area remains under winter storm warning
Staff Writer It looks like Minnesotans will have to get their driveways and sidewalks plowed and get their boots dusted off to get to work Monday.
The Brainerd area and much of the Upper Midwest remains in a winter storm warning until 6 p.m. Sunday, the National Weather Service in Duluth said Saturday morning.
Meteorologist Ed Flenz said that by the time the snow storm is over that the Brainerd area could see between 8 to 12 inches of snow. He said the snow will come in spurts throughout the weekend. Along with the snow will be blustery winds.
"It's been quite awhile since we've had this big of a snow storm," said Flenz.
The Brainerd area is expected to see about two to four inches of snow Saturday and another three to five inches Saturday night. Sunday it will snow some more with an accumulation of up to two inches.
The southern portion of Minnesota is expected to get another five to 10 inches of snow and the winds will be much stronger there causing drifting of snow, said Lenz.
Flenz said the large storm system is centered over Kansas and it should hit the Wisconsin and Illinois border by Monday morning.
"This is a slow moving storm system," said Flenz. "The upper level in the atmosphere is closed and that's why it's a slow moving system."
Flenz said with the strong winds and blowing snow he advises drivers to be careful because there will be slippery spots on the roads.
