CROSSLAKE -- The 43-year-old man who died Monday after a tree he was cutting fell on him has been identified as Charles McMahon, the Crosslake Police Department reported.
McMahon and his friends had been cutting down trees in the woods behind McMahon's Crosslake residence. The friends left about noon and when they returned about 3:45 p.m., they found McMahon pinned beneath a large tree.
Blood donors needed in Brainerd drive
One of the largest blood drives in Minnesota will be held next week at the Brainerd National Guard Armory.
Dee Severson, blood drive coordinator, said there is a national alert out for blood since blood banks are dangerously low. Some surgeries are being delayed because of the blood shortage. Donors are desperately needed for this drive, said Severson.
The five-day blood drive will be 1 to 7 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday at the National Guard Armory.
Before giving blood, American Red Cross officials recommend that qualified donors build up their hematocrit, or the percentage of red blood cells in their blood, by increasing their iron intake through appropriate diet so they are allowed to donate blood. Some of the best sources of iron include red meat, fish, poultry, liver, iron-fortified breakfast cereals, beans and peas, lentils, breads and cereals, and dried fruits.
Severson personally recommends an old-family remedy of one tablespoon of molasses mixed with milk or Cream of Wheat be taken three times a day.
"It works wonders in three to four days before donating," Severson said.
Additionally, eating foods rich in vitamin C increase the amount of iron absorbed.
Anyone who is at least age 17, weighs at least 110 pounds and is considered to be in good health may be eligible to give blood.
To make an appointment to donate blood, call Severson at 829-3485.

Deadline set for registering rental units
Rental property owners and managers have until March 4 to hand in their rental housing registration fees to the city of Brainerd for the units they rented this year.
The city's building and inspections department is collecting the registration fees. The Brainerd City Council agreed to renew the agreement for rental inspections and to collect renting housing registration fees for 2004 and 2005. The registration fee for rental property owners and managers is $12 per unit.
To request the registration information and forms, call the inspections office at 828-2309.
