Staples council tables Highway 10 relocation STAPLES CITY COUNCIL Staff Writer A possible vote on relocating Highway 10 in Staples will wait until at least March 8.
The Staples City Council on Tuesday tabled an agenda item on a proposed final layout from the Minnesota Department of Transportation to move Highway 10 one block south, from Second Avenue to First Avenue, said City Administrator Jerry Brever.
Following a public hearing on the final layout Jan. 21, the city council has 90 days to make a decision.
"We're working on refining questions they had regarding the current layout ... that are minor and reasonable," said Chad Hausmann, MnDOT project manager.
MnDOT has been studying the Highway 10 relocation in Staples since 1994, Hausmann said. He noted Staples and Wadena are the only stretches in which the highway isn't four lanes, and there are traffic and safety concerns with the current two-lane road through Staples.
Colleen Donley, who owns the Batcher Block Opera House on Second Avenue in Staples -- the current location of Highway 10 -- and is leading an effort to block the relocation, said about 18 business owners attended Tuesday's council meeting. She said she was pleased the item was tabled.
"Any type of delay is a good delay," she said.
