Tips for staying safe while driving during storm
Everyone should be cautious about traveling in extreme winter weather. Follow these tips to stay safe as you drive in Minnesota:

¥ If you don't have to travel, don't.

¥ If you must travel, be sure your vehicle is in good winter driving condition. Clean frost and snow off all windows, mirrors, lights and reflectors. Equip your car with good wiper blades and keep an ample supply of windshield washer fluid. Keep your gas tank at least one-half full.

¥ Prepare a winter survival kit containing small candles and matches; a small, sharp knife and plastic spoons; a red bandana or cloth to tie to your radio antenna in case you get stuck; pencil and paper; safety pins; a whistle; snacks; a cell-phone adapter to plug into your lighter; and a plastic flashlight with spare batteries.

¥ Other items that should be stored in your car include a 30-foot cord to use as a homing line when you must exit the vehicle; booster cables; basic tools; sand, cat litter or other grit; a shovel; tow cables or a chain; sleeping bags or blankets; road flares and reflectors; and a snowmobile suit and heavy boots.

¥ Listen to forecasts, road reports and storm warnings.

¥ Dress appropriately.

¥ Allow extra time for trips in severe weather.

¥ Tell someone where you are going and the route you will take. Report your safe arrival.

¥ Stay in your vehicle. Walking in a storm can be very dangerous.

¥ Avoid overexertion by shoveling snow or pushing your car.

¥ Keep fresh air in your vehicle.

¥ Get a feel for the road when you first start out by accelerating carefully to test wheel-spin and brake gently to test skidding.

¥ Increase your following distance.
