'Git-r-done' Area residents just want results Associate Editor Brainerd area shoppers at the Westgate Mall want state lawmakers who convened the 2006 session Wednesday to adopt the philosophy of TV comic Larry the Cable Guy and just "git-r-done."
LaVon Skoog, 81, Brainerd, said lawmakers should "tend to business" instead of gabbing and traveling.
"I'd like to see them do their jobs so they don't have any special sessions," Skoog said.
She said she's proud of Minnesota's professional teams and would like them to stay in the state, so she's not opposed to stadium proposals.
She would favor giving voters a chance to support or reject the Defense of Marriage Act, even though she's not certain it's necessary.
"I think what we've got covers it, but people are always yelling," Skoog said. "I think they (the legislators) sit down there and bat things around too much."
Charles Kuester, 67, Aitkin, was disappointed in the Legislature's recent failures to finish its work on time. He described the special sessions as a "waste of time and a waste of taxpayer dollars." He would like to see them "get their business done" and "get it done on time."
More money is needed for education, he said, and many roads in the Brainerd and Aitkin areas should be blacktopped or reconstructed. Highway 65, he said, is "rougher than a cob."
Karrisa Stelter, 24, Pillager, also wanted to see more money go to education, specifically to help fund high school sports. She said the state should concentrate on helping Minnesotans before it considers helping victims of Hurricane Katrina. She would favor a stadium, but suggested that it be able to serve both football and baseball.
Joshua Evans, 28, Brainerd, thinks teachers deserve better salaries.
"Why are doctors making more money than teachers?" he asked.
He said he was against changing the state's constitution to add a definition of marriage. Politicians, he advised, should stay away from religion.
David Stelter, 18, Pillager, said more computers could be used in schools.
Kirsten Arianejad, 37, Brainerd, supports the Defense of Marriage Act.
"Our country is based on the Bible," she said.
