PL 'Rock for Darfur' puts rocking chairs in motion for a good cause
Staff Writer PEQUOT LAKES - All you need are some friends and a reliable rocking chair to make a difference in the lives of others.
The Pequot Lakes Student Council, for the second year, is sponsoring "Rock for Darfur," a rock-a-thon to raise money and awareness of the victims of the genocide that is currently going on in Darfur, Sudan.
The rock-a-thon will take place from 4 p.m. until midnight on Friday at the Pequot Lakes High School gym. Registration is from 3:30-4 p.m. Cost is a $20 donation for each team of one to five people who bring their own rocking chair and take turns rocking for a full eight hours. Registration is first come, first serve. There is room for 70 teams.
Each team is given a 10 foot-by-10 foot area to have food, blankets, decorations, lawn chairs and more. The person who raises the most funds for Darfur will be given an inspi(RED) iPod nano.
The event will feature live music, food, music videos, presentations, information booths, speakers, a movie, Darfur diaries video and will include a place where you can purchase Darfur apparel. People are encouraged to bring their cell phones since they will be having a phone blitz to contact legislators and tell them they care about what is happening in Darfur and want the United States to intervene.
Students from the lakes area and community members are invited to participate. Pequot Lakes student council members last month traveled to Pillager, Aitkin, Crosby-Ironton and Staples-Motley high schools to speak to their student councils, encouraging them to form their own teams and participate.
Last year the event raised nearly $6,000, but since the rock-a-thon is expected to be much larger this year, organizers are hoping to double that amount.

Registrations for the event may be sent to PLHS Darfur Rock-A-Thon, 30805 Olson Street, Pequot Lakes, MN 56472. Checks may be made out to PLHS.
