LF pool-water park idea sinking in
LITTLE FALLS -- Six years ago, Little Falls learned from the Blandin Foundation that one of the city's biggest needs was recreation.

The city looked at creating an outdoor pool or a water park to fill the need, but discussion eventually died as other projects took priority.

Today the issue is back on the table and the Little Falls City Council appointed an Outdoor Swimming Pool Task Force to investigate how the city could build a swimming pool or an outdoor water park. The city received a $10,000 grant from the Little Falls Area Foundation to conduct a feasibility study and look at the idea.

The task force, consisting of business and community members, researched a few options and heard a $3 million outdoor water park proposal from USAquatics of Delano.

Mark Gerbi, task force chair, said the proposal was too expensive and the task force plans to look at other water parks in the state and to get other estimates.

Little Falls City Administrator Richard Carlson said the city is looking at spending between $500,000 to $1 million on a proposal. Carlson said the financing has not yet been determined, but he said funds could be raised or the city could hold a referendum.

Carlson said the land and the site work could be donated. The city has land available for a water park.

Two issues the task force discussed Wednesday at city hall were park ownership and whether the water project should be built for the community or as a tourist attraction, which would determine the park's location. If it was a tourist attraction the water park should be built along Highway 10, said Carol Anderson, a task force member.

The task force will meet March 29 to hear from Eagle Construction in Little Falls about its experience building swimming pool projects.
