Ehnstrom named finalist for family physician of the year
CAREER

AITKIN - Aitkin Dr. Jeffrey Ehnstrom was named a finalist for Minnesota Family Physician of the Year Award.

The Minnesota Academy of Family Physicians has announced Ehnstrom, a family physician who practices at Riverwood Healthcare Center, is one of four finalists for the 2010 Family Physician of the Year Award.

Family physicians were nominated for the award by patients and colleagues. The MAFP Board of Directors will select a winner after reviewing each finalist's qualifications and reading nomination letters received on their behalf. The 2010 Family Physician of the Year will be announced at the MAFP All-Member Celebration on April 15. The other three finalists are Dr. Timothy Halloran, Le Sueur, Dr. Richard Wehseler, New London, and Dr. Theresa Wollan, Vadnais Heights.

The Family Physician of the Year Award honors a family physician for compassionate, comprehensive and caring medical services, involvement in community affairs and serving as a role model to his or her community, health care professionals, family practice residents and medical students.

Ward earns top 2009 CISP exam score

Ryan Ward, an individual retirement account consultant for Ascensus in Brainerd, earned the top Certified IRA Services Professional exam score in 2009.

Ward obtained his bachelor's degree from St. Cloud State University in business management.

Fleisher joins Crow Wing County Victim Services

Kathy Fleisher joined Crow Wing County Victim Services Inc. as executive director/victim advocate.

Victim Services is a nonprofit organization that provides crime victims with aid and support as they move through the criminal justice system as well as services to cope with the impact of the crime.

McClain named Little Falls employee of the month

LITTLE FALLS - Becky McClain, Little Falls, was named employee of the month for March by the Little Falls Chamber of Commerce Outstanding Service Committee.

McClain, the married mother of six, works for Lin Furniture as a sales manager. McClain has been with the business for 11 years and manager for a decade. She also is Dam Festival Chairperson and serves on the chamber's City of Lights Task Force.

Her supervisors praised her customer service as a key component in serving the community.

CLC staffers at state conference

Nancy Paulson, director of human resources at Central Lakes College, and Betsy Picciano, a reading and college and career studies instructor, were presenters for a break-out session titled "Mentoring That Matters" at the Center for Teaching and Learning Conference Feb. 26-27 at Minneapolis Community and Technical College. The event was hosted by the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system.

They talked about CLC's faculty mentoring program.

Others representing the Brainerd and Staples college were Kari Frisch, Kathryn Black Lance, Martha Kuehn, Dave Bissonette, David Stumpf, Leane Perius, Ryan Deblock, Ann Domagala, Michael Amick, Pamela Nelson, and Connie Moroni.

MPCA reports enforcement action

The Minnesota Pollution Control Agency concluded 56 enforcement cases totaling $2,010,744 in penalties during the fourth quarter of 2009, including those in the area.

• $5,500 Ð JRO Properties, Nisswa Pole Barns, Nisswa, for stormwater violations.

The cases occurred at facilities in 36 counties throughout Minnesota. For all of 2009, 229 cases were concluded totaling $3,974,422 in penalties.

The penalties for the following cases are all forgivable:

$2,250 Ð Harlen Muller, Cass Lake, for solid waste violations.

$1,624 Ð Sandy Lake Sand and Gravel, McGregor, for air quality violations.

Little Falls Chamber sponsors Business After Hours

LITTLE FALLS - The Little Falls Area Chamber of Commerce will conduct its next Business After Hours networking event at 4:30 to 6 p.m. Thursday at event host Bieganek Insurance Agency, 214 Second St. N.E. Hors d'oeuvres and refreshments will be served.

Lakes Vybe hosts March 18 luncheon

Lakes Vybe is hosting a networking event 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 18 at Central Lakes College Cafeteria, 501 W. College Drive, Brainerd with a discussion about personalities in the workplace led by Gary Gunderson, licensed psychologist and College of St. Scholastica psychology instructor.

Participants may identify their personality type and learn how to successfully interact with co-workers or others who are different.

The Mid-Minnesota Builders Association general membership meeting will be 5:30-8:30 p.m. March 16 at the Legacy at Cragun's/Club House.

WORKSHOPS

Financial and estate planning set March 24

PIERZ - Dine and Discover luncheon in Pierz by Faith in Action, a division of Horizon Health Inc. will focus on financial and estate planning.

The event is planned 11:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. March 24 at Horizon Health's Community Room in Pierz.

George Cermack, independent financial consultant from Little Falls, will discuss financial and estate planning options, with a focus on Medical Assistance.

Boiler license classes offered at CLC

Boiler operation courses and tests are planned at Central Lakes College.

A 30-hour course, from 6-9 p.m. March 15, 18, 22, 25, 29, April 1, 5, 8, 12, 15 at the Business and Industry Center at CLC in Brainerd, gives participants an opportunity to upgrade their license or prepare for taking the boiler's license exam from special to chief. Cost is $329 including the book. Instructor is Dave Horn.

A boiler operators workshop, 15 hour course, 6-9 p.m. April 26, 29, May 3, 6, 10, gives participants an opportunity to prepare for special and second class boiler exams. Cost is $165. Instructor is Dave Horn.

Boiler Exams are given by the Minnesota Department of Labor & Industry. All applications and affidavits for boiler operator licensing must be pre-approved and pre-paid 15 calendar-days prior to the exam date.

Exams are scheduled at the Brainerd campus 1 p.m. on the following Mondays - April 5, Oct. 4 and Dec. 6.

LASHO presentsprogram March 18

The Lakes Area Safety and Health Organization will host a seminar on powered industrial vehicle and forklift safety.

The session begins with a continental breakfast at 9:30 a.m. March 18 at the Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College in Brainerd. The program is from 10-11:30 a.m. Guest speak is Jolene Sutton, safety coordinator with Premier Precision, Falls Facility.

The presentation will cover: a review of Occupational Safety and Health Administration powered industrial vehicle information, training/certification requirements, types of powered industrial vehicles, fundamentals of lift truck stability, fuel handling and storage/batteries.

The program is free to LASHO members and $10 per person for non-members.

Rental housing meeting scheduled Monday

Fundamentals of rental property management in Minnesota, a class that is geared for new rental housing owners or managers, will be held from 1-3 p.m. Monday at the Brainerd Police Department.

Participants in the class will learn the nuts and bolts of property management including: Accepting applications, screening basics, leases, security deposits, fair housing, protecting your investment, licensing and regulations, ending the tenancy and evictions.

Cost of the class is $39 for Minnesota Multi-Housing Association members or $59 for non-members. To register call Elizabeth Harris at 829-2805.

Kurilla Real Estate agents win awards

Kurilla Real Estate recently announced that John Hunter and the Pecarich marketing team were presented with the 2009 Broker of the Year and the 2009 Marketing Team of the Year awards in recognition of their success, professionalism and commitment.

Hunter has been a real estate broker in the Brainerd lakes area for the last 25 years, specializing in marketing lakeshore property. Hunter was awarded the Broker of the Year by Kurilla Real Estate. Hunter, who has been a consistent top producer over the years, is a member of the Greater Lakes Association of Realtors, National Association of Realtors and the Nisswa Lions.

John P. Pecarich and Matt Pecarich joined Kurilla Real Estate in 2007 and have a combined 42 years in the real estate business. The Pecarich team has received regional and state sales awards over the years and belongs to the GLAR and NAR.

Brainerd Homes Inc., recently was awarded Clayton Homes' Five Star Customer Service Award.

Rock Yliniemi is the owner of Brainerd Homes and Jeff Miller is the set and service supervisor.

Edina Realtors earn awards

Edina Realty recently announced that Crosslake agents Bill and Joan Grunewald and Judy Hansen of Up North Properties Marketing Team and Baxter agent Marc Kuhnley achieved the Master's Circle Award as top sales producers in the 2009 market year. Sue Coulter and Darla Jensen of Crosslake and Baxter agents Dan and Tina Ellithorpe, Pat and Nick Heinen and Albie and Dustin Kuschel of the Kuschel marketing team were recognized as Presidents Circle award winners for 2009.
