Woman killed by train identified Victim was Emelia Ann Howard of rural Menahga Staff Writer The 29-year-old woman who was struck and killed by a train Saturday night in downtown Brainerd has been identified as Emelia Ann Howard of rural Menahga.
About 8:36 p.m. Saturday, Brainerd police officers received a report that an eastbound BNSF Railway train struck a pedestrian about 400 feet east of the intersection of North Eighth and Front streets.
Brainerd Police Chief John Bolduc said the train's engineer spotted the woman walking along the railroad tracks and sounded the train's whistle, but the woman didn't move off the tracks. The engineer called 911 to report the accident, Bolduc said.
Howard was transported by North Ambulance to St. Joseph's Medical Center in Brainerd, where she was pronounced dead.
Bolduc said it wasn't known why Howard was walking on the tracks. He said police officers had been searching for Howard to check on her welfare Saturday, but were not aware the victim hit by the train was her until after she was transported to the hospital.
Bolduc declined to comment further on why police officers were attempting to check on Howard's welfare.
An autopsy is being conducted, but Bolduc said the results might not be known for some time.
Howard's husband, Jeremy Howard, declined to comment.
Five railroad crossings in downtown Brainerd were blocked for about 45 minutes Saturday night as emergency crews and law enforcement officers investigated the fatal collision.
