Of bird houses, families
Staff Writer Organizers expect more than 500 people to turn out for the Friends of Crane Meadows Habitat Day celebration Saturday at the Crane Meadows National Wildlife Refuge near Little Falls.
Irene Strong, Friends of Crane Meadows president, said Saturday's event will bring families of all generations together to support the national resources at the refuge while they are having fun building wood duck houses and blue bird houses.
"The weather is supposed to be nice, and this event will give families an inexpensive outing that will be a learning opportunity for them," Strong said.
The event runs from 9 a.m.-2 p.m.
Strong said Friends of Crane Meadows, which was organized in July and has a nine-member board, will supply the material for the duck and bird houses. She said there is no cost to families and they will be able to assemble the houses and take them home.
"These are really nice bird houses and they're good for the environment," Strong said. "We'll help the families with where they should put the houses that will provide a nice nesting for the birds."
Strong said the refuge is a great asset for the community. People interested in attending the event can get to the refuge by taking Highway 10 south of Little Falls and then going east on Morrison County Road 35. The refuge entrance is located just after the Platte River crossing.
