Board approves repairs for BHS wall
Brainerd School Board
The Brainerd High School pool will be closed for repairs through the summer but school officials are hoping the reconstruction project will provide a "lifetime fix" for continuing moisture problems in the exterior wall of the facility.

Steve Lund, director of business services, said the district received four bids for the first phase of construction - to remove the interior section of an outer wall in the pool area to prevent additional damage. Bids received ranged from $124,950 to $261,400.

Board members Monday accepted the bid for $124,950 from Hy-Tec Construction of Brainerd.

Lund said many technological advances, including properly managed air flow, have been made since the pool was constructed and this action should correct the problem. He said construction, including new tile and high performance sealer and coating, could begin in early April and be completed on this interior wall in early June.

The second phase of construction, which will be let out for bids within the next month, will involve replacing the exterior wall where brick is crumbling. He said phase two construction will hopefully be completed this summer.

The board authorized a lease agreement with Journey North Church to conduct Saturday worship services in the Franklin Arts Center auditorium. Brainerd Community Education Director Todd Lyscio told the board that he is planning a meeting March 22 and invited various arts organizations to come together to find how the Franklin auditorium may better be utilized as a community resource.

The board approved the second readings of a sick leave request policy and a use of school district facilities and equipment policy.

The board approved the first readings of an employee gender nondiscrimination policy and a student disability nondiscrimination policy to be compliant with the Americans with Disabilities Act requirements.

The board accepted the resignation of Forestview Principal Donna Whalen, who is retiring as of June 15.

Negotiating teams from the school board and Education Minnesota Brainerd, the district's teachers' union, plan to meet with a mediator Tuesday at Washington Educational Services Building in Brainerd to attempt to reach a teachers' contract settlement.
