Squirrel knocks out power to 13,000
A single squirrel knocked out electricity to a large portion of northern Crow Wing County Wednesday morning.
Char Kinzer, Crow Wing Power public relations manager, said the squirrel climbed a 45-foot transmission pole about 7 a.m. along Crow Wing County Road 1 near Manhattan Beach, tangled with an insulator on top of the pole, which subsequently burst into flames.
More than 13,000 customers, from Nisswa to Outing to Crosby, lost power, said Kinzer. Power was restored through back-feeding from other electricity sources. Kinzer said for some customers power was restored within a couple minutes, others in about 45 minutes. The pole is owned by Great River Energy, Crow Wing Power's wholesale power provider, and is being replaced. No other power outages are expected.
The squirrel didn't survive, said Kinzer.
