Heritage Sites Program responds to 'Walker Hill' site probe
CASS LAKE - The Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, through its Heritage Sites Program, feels that it is necessary to clear up public misconceptions that have been generated by recent newspaper articles about the authenticity of the archaeological findings at the "Walker Hill Site."

The Heritage Sites Program responded to the state archaeologist's opinion that artifacts were made by nature and not created by humans for use as tools some 13,000 to 15,000 years ago.

"It should be made clear that the archaeological investigation that is currently taking place at the 'Walker Hill Site' is not completed. Accordingly, statements in regards to a final determination being made about the authenticity of the findings at the site are premature. Further research of the 'Walker Hill Site' is scheduled for the summer of 2007."

The Leech Lake Heritage Sites Program has been working with the city of Walker officials on how to proceed with the archaeological investigations. Currently, the Walker Community Center is under construction near the site and it was voted unanimously by the Walker City Council to suspend work on a new city road until the archaeological investigations are complete and a final determination has been made as to the findings at the site.

"Normally, the authenticity of findings at an archaeological site are not publicly debated. Instead, they are subjected to peer review by experts in their respective fields of study before a final determination can be made regarding the authenticity of the artifacts or the integrity of the site," the Heritage Sites Program reported. "The priority of the Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe Heritage Sites Program at this time is to preserve the archaeological site until their research is done and a proper assessment can be completed to provide a firm conclusion that either supports or refutes the preliminary assessments of the artifacts found at the 'Walker Hill Site.'"
