LOCAL BRIEFS Bologna snowmobile ride scheduled Wednesday
The Crow Wing County Snowmobile Trail Association has scheduled a bologna ride Wednesday.
Participants will ride to the Trail Break Bar and Grill, located 1 mile south of Pine River off State Highway 371, where they will be served an all-you-can-eat meal of bologna and mashed potatoes and gravy.
The event runs from 11 a.m.-2 p.m. For more information, call 821-6444.
Brainerd Warriors to host chess tournament
The Brainerd Warriors Chess Tournament will be March 29 at Forestview Middle School in Baxter. Registration begins at 8 a.m. with matches going from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Pre-registration is $10 at Forestview Middle School or at the Washington Education Services Building. Registration at the door is $15.
The tournament will consist of five rounds, four rounds assured, one round per hour. Clocks started for unfinished games at 45 minutes.
The top players in divisions K-3, 4-6, and 7-12 will receive awards. The "traveling" team trophy will go to the first-place team, runner-up award to second-place team. (Scores based on top 4 players from each team.)
To compete bring chess sets if possible (tournament style preferred), lunch and snacks. Snack concessions will be available. Wear comfortable clothing.

Bloodmobile schedule announced
March is American Red Cross Month. The Red Cross is committed to providing blood and blood products, disaster assistance and emergency social services across America and worldwide.
Blood donations will be taken at the Heritage Assembly of God Church, 13242 Berrywood Drive in Baxter from 1-7 p.m. March 17-20 and 10 a.m.-4 p.m. March 21. The Mid-America Division of the American Red Cross Blood Services supplies blood products to nearly 250 hospitals in 10 states and across the nation.
To make an appointment call (800) 448-3543 or visit givebloodgivelife.org. All blood types are needed. A blood donor card, driver's license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Donors must be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 100 pounds.
Bald eagles to be at arboretum
Third annual educational program presented by the University of Minnesota Raptor Center will begin at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Northland Arboretum Visitor Center. Bald eagles and other raptors will be there for the presentation. Doors will open at 9:45 a.m. The fee is $10 per family for arboretum members and $20 per family for non-members. No registration is required.
Crosslake plans special meeting Tuesday
CROSSLAKE - The Crosslake Planning and Zoning Commission/Board of Zoning Adjustment will conduct a special meeting at 9 a.m. Tuesday at city hall.
The purpose of the meeting will be to review and discuss Chapter 3, subdivision regulations (platting), of the City Code related to land subdivisions in general, metes and bounds subdivisions and proposed draft administrative lot splits and/or minor subdivisions.
The meeting may include a quorum, three or more members, of the Crosslake City Council to observe and participate in the proceedings. There will be no agenda or any official actions taken by the city council members.
Pawlenty appoints eight to council
Gov. Tim Pawlenty announced the appointment of Rob Harper as a member of the Minnesota Forest Resources Council.
Harper, Cass Lake, is the forest supervisor for the Chippewa National Forest and has more than 17 years of experience with the U.S. Forest Service. He has worked as a district ranger, a water rights hydrologist, a firefighter and a smoke jumper. He graduated from Lake Superior State College with a degree in geology and earned his master of science degree in geology from Indiana University. He is appointed as the U.S. Forest Service member to a four-year term that expires Jan. 2, 2012. He replaces Jim Sanders on the council.
The Minnesota Forest Resources Council develops recommendations to the governor and to federal, state, county and local governments with respect to forest resource policies and practices that result in the sustainable management, use and protection of the state's forest resources.
Sign-up for Dairy Disaster Assistance Program resumes
Eligible dairy producers who suffered production losses in 2005, 2006 or 2007 may apply to receive benefits under the Dairy Disaster Assistance Program III. Producers can sign up at their local USDA Farm Service Agency service center until May 5.
This dairy program will provide $16 million in benefits to dairy producers for dairy production losses that occurred between Jan. 1, 2005, and Dec. 31, 2007, because of natural disasters. To be eligible, a producer's operation must be in a county designated a major disaster or emergency area by the president or declared a natural disaster area by the agriculture secretary.

Senior dances will be 1-4 Tuesday in Motley with music by Country Pride; 1-4 Wednesday at Waukenabo with music by Gary Martin; and 2-6 Sunday at the Backus Legion with music by Jerry B.
