Local briefs C-I prom plans continue despite teachers' strike
CROSBY -- The Crosby-Ironton High School junior class officers and their advisers continue to work on plans for the school's prom.
Shellie Wynn, youth development coordinator for the school district and the student council adviser, said prom will be 8 p.m. to midnight April 9 at Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge. She said it's being organized by the junior class officers, Kate Dullinger, Reese Harris, Chelsea Lundgren, Andrea Borden, Carissa Steuck. They're assisted by Wynn and Rene Lind, a prom adviser.
Wynn said if the strike is settled in time the grand march will be in Woock Gym at the high school. If the strike is not settled by April 9, a meet and greet session will be conducted at a location that hasn't been disclosed yet.
Tickets for the prom are $35 for a single person and $70 for a couple. Arrangements for tickets may be made at the Crosby-Ironton Courier office.
BHS parent teacher conferences set Thursday
The Brainerd High School parent teacher conferences will be 4-8 p.m. Thursday in the high school cafeteria and media center.
Koering bill provides state fair campers with more space
ST. PAUL -- A bill designed to provide state fairgoers with adequate camping space was passed last week by the Minnesota Senate. The bill was authored by Sen. Paul Koering, R-Little Falls.
The bill, which passed earlier in the House, and is headed to the governor for his signature, directs the State Agricultural Society to continue to operate and maintain the full complement of camping spaces on the fairgrounds during the state fair, regardless of the commissioner of health's attempts to cut the number of spaces.
"We need to maintain adequate camping space so that the members of FFA and 4-H can stay overnight while they attend to their livestock," Koering said.
Hearing set Tuesday for Koering's 'Peeping Tom' bill
ST. PAUL -- Sen. Paul Koering, R-Fort Ripley, and three victims of video voyeurism are scheduled to attend a hearing on Koering's legislation that would make video voyeurism involving a minor a felony offense.
The hearing is 3 p.m. Tuesday before the Senate Crime Prevention Committee at the Capitol.
The bill covers intrusions by video equipment into homes, dressing rooms, hotel rooms and other places where someone would normally expect privacy.
Blaine will author legislation for Vinland veterans center
Rep. Greg Blaine, R-Little Falls, will author a bill to provide services for veterans at the Vinland Center.
His bill would appropriate $200,000 from the bond proceeds fund to the commissioner of veterans affairs for grants to the center, located in Loretto. It would be used for vocational rehabilitation, developmental disabilities and chemical dependency.
Vinland Center is a Minnesota-based rehabilitation center.
Extension Service offering two shoreland workshops
The University of Minnesota Extension Service is offering two workshops relating to shoreland issues in April.
An introduction to shoreland revegetation is slated for 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. at the Salem Lutheran Church in Longville. The workshop is for shoreland property owners who want to protect their investment who want to lean ho to design a project, select appropriate plants, prepare the site, plant and maintain it.
A shoreland erosion control workshop for property owners will be conducted from 8:30 a.m. - to 4 p.m. at the Nisswa Community Center. The workshop will assist shoreland owners, lake association members, government officials, landscape and nursery professionals and natural resource staff to evaluate a shoreline, select erosion control methods and develop a lake-friendly stabilization plan for eroding shoreline.
Cost of each workshop is $35.
