Todd Lyscio named Brainerd Community Education director
BRAINERD SCHOOL BOARD
Todd Lyscio, a Forestview assistant principal and middle level activities director, has been named Brainerd Community Education director, Superintendent Jerry Walseth announced at Monday's Brainerd School Board meeting.

Lyscio will take over the post July 1. Paul Bloom, who has served as community education director since 1985 and previously had been a teacher in the district since 1975, plans to retire -- again. Bloom retired in 2003 but had been working on a yearly contractual basis since then.

Todd Lyscio will start his new job July 1.

Walseth said there were 11 applicants for the community education director position and the district interviewed four of the applicants. Since Lyscio's job change is considered an administrative reassignment, the school board did not have to approve his hiring at Monday's board meeting. Walseth said Lyscio's assistant principal position at Forestview will be eliminated once he becomes community education director, one of the first budgeted cuts for the 2005-2006 fiscal year, and his duties will be shifted to others at Forestview Middle School in Baxter.

Lyscio, a 1979 Brainerd High School graduate, has spent 21 years in education, 18 years working in the school district. He served as principal in the Staples-Motley School District for three years before returning for the past two years as assistant principal at Mississippi Horizons and middle level athletics director. He and his wife, Connie, have two sons, Tom, a ninth-grader at Franklin Junior High School; and Michael, a kindergartner at Lincoln Elementary School.

"I'm thrilled," said Lyscio, of his new post. "It's a wonderful position in a school district, to be able to work close with school district administrators and staff but also to be involved more with the community. That's what I've really admired about Paul and the work he has done. He's built a lot of bridges between the community and the district."

Lyscio said he would like to continue to be involved with the middle level athletics program in some capacity. He said the majority of middle level athletic events will be held at Forestview, as will many of the community education programs, and both programs lend themselves to be combined in some form.

Lyscio said his new job is a wonderful career opportunity and he looks forward to his new role in the district.

"The bar has already been set really high and the credit goes to Paul and his staff," said Lyscio.
