A House subcommittee gave preliminary approval to higher education bonding requests totaling $122 million, which included $5.4 million for Brainerd Community College. A funding request for Brainerd Technical College was not included in the bill.

Because West Washington Street is considered an especially hazardous stretch of highway, the city of Brainerd is about to get a federal windfall. The improvement project from the bridge to the west city limits will get 90 percent of the $600,000 from the feds.

Several area residents took part in snowmobile races at West Yellowstone last weekend. Roger Ebert, Nisswa, drove his 634 cc. Arctic Cat to victory in the C Main race. His brother, Russ, is a mechanic for Arctic Cat and was at the races.

Defending champion of Region Six, the Brainerd Warrior basketball squad bowed to Alexandria 40-35 in the semi-finals at the North Dakota Agriculture College fieldhouse. It was only Brainerd's second defeat in 27 games this season.
80 years ago (1930)
Installation of the radio system for St. Joseph's Hospital, made possible through public donations, will begin tomorrow and be complete in a month. The $1,400 system will provide headphones for each room, plus loudspeakers that can summon staff.
100 years ago (1910)
The fire department was called out to the south end of Seventh Street this morning by a fire in a pair of overalls. The overalls were put out of business but the house was not damaged.
