BIZ BUZZ Business specializing in recreation to open in Crosby Senior Reporter Gander Mountain expects to open its store in the former Wal-Mart building along Edgewood Drive in Baxter this summer. Nor-son is working on store renovations. Gander Mountain is headquartered in Minneapolis. The specialty retailer, which serves outdoors enthusiasts, had 82 stores in 14 states as of the end of February.
Cycle Path & Paddle is a new business in Crosby across from Serpent Park that is expected to open in May.
If there is enough interest from the public the business could offer mine lake interpretive tours by canoes and kayaks. The business already plans to work with area resorts and lodging establishments to offer those tours to guests.
Brad and Jennifer Smith reported buying the building in January and renovating it by gutting the interior for a beauty salon and retail space and adding a second story for office space. The Cycle Path & Paddle is Jennifer Smith's business with sporting goods sales and rentals.
The business will include bikes, canoes and kayaks, sporting goods accessories along with what they characterize as a limited line of clothing and gift items. In a news release, Jennifer Smith credited the opening of the Cuyuna Lakes State Trail and development of the Cuyuna Country State Recreation Area for growing business potential at Cycle Path & Paddle.
Eclipse Studio, owned by Nanette Tuthill, will move into the building's lower level, leaving a main street setting. Eclipse Studio plans to offer hair services and products, sugaring and tanning and Willow Tree figurines. Other collectibles and Ranger Wear will move to Cycle Path & Paddle, the Smiths reported.
In the office space above, United Packaging Inc. will set up corporate headquarters with expectations to increase the staff of five by adding another three employees in 2005. Other office space will be leased later.
Home Instead Senior Care is another new business in the lakes area working in Crow Wing, Cass, Morrison, Todd and Wadena counties.
The business goal is to help senior citizens retain their independence and stay at home as long as they are able by hiring caregivers to help with cooking, cleaning, companionship, laundry, medication reminders, errands and shopping. The business, on Baxter Drive, was started by Deborah Cranny. Services range from a few hours a week to 24 hours a day, with short-term and long-term help available that includes holidays.
Deb and Michael Cranny reported they both worked for Bethany Good Samaritan Village in Brainerd for 10 years, then moved to Sioux Falls, S.D., where Mike continued with Good Samaritan and Deb worked as an independent accounting consultant for small businesses.
