Councilman wants Brainerd to become a City of Character
Staff Writer In an effort to make Brainerd a better place to live and to improve the quality of life for residents, the Brainerd City Council on Monday will be asked to take on the challenge of becoming a City of Character.
Brainerd City Council member Kevin Goedker said Friday he will ask the council to take its first step to be a role model to others in the community to build good character traits.
"As leaders in the community, it is important to have good character," Goedker said. "This is needed in order to have a healthy community and it has to begin with the leaders."
City council members will be asked Monday to pass a resolution to establish Brainerd as a City of Character with the International Association of Character Cities. The IACC is an organization that helps cities encourage true success by implementing community-wide character initiatives.
Goedker said there is no cost to be a City of Character, but there would be a cost for training. The IACC provides training and materials at reduced rates for government agencies.
Goedker said he would like the city council establish a Character Committee consisting of community members to help the city work on different characteristics each month and to implement them.
An example of what the city council could do to commit to building character is to practice sincerity. To do this a city council member would take responsibility for his or her actions, respect other people's opinions, always mean what the person says and not take advantage of other people.
"If the city council can make it work, other portions of the community can make it work," Goedker said.
