Career
Toso earns maurices' cruise incentive

LITTLE FALLS - Kelly Toso, maurices store associate from Little Falls, earned a cruise and will join 148 other company associates for a five-day cruise in March aboard the Norwegian Caribbean The Dawn traveling to Grand Cayman and Cozumel.

Departing from Miami, the annual cruise is a company-sponsored event and a representation of maurices core values, vision, and culture. The cruise rewards the top 60 store managers, top store associates, and district managers and brings the company's top performers together, along with executives and associates from the home office.

Anderson joins Randall State Bank

RANDALL - Neil Anderson joined the Randall State Bank as president.

Anderson will be the bank president, board member and will be joining in the ownership of the bank.

Anderson has more than 20 years of banking experience and was most recently with Security Bank in Chaska as the bank's branch president. Anderson is a former military officer with more than 15 years of service as a former Minnesota National Guard member.

Cass County SHIP coordinator named

WALKER - Leslie Staker joined Cass County Health, Human and Veterans services by contract as Statewide Health Improvement Program grant coordinator on March 3.

She will be leading the Community Leadership Team in efforts to reduce obesity and tobacco use throughout Cass County. Staker received her bachelor's degree at Bemidji State University and her master's degree in mass communications at St. Cloud State University. Staker has organized and implemented several health focused events, including Kids Day America, Creating Wellness and the Bemidji Wellness Challenge.

The Statewide Health Improvement Program was developed in response to the 2007 Legislature's request to develop a plan for statewide health promotion to address the rising cost of health and health care in the state.

The Community Leadership team members are: Beth Swanson, BiCAP; Jill May, Extension Services; Jon Knopik, Minnesota Council on Aging; Kelly Felton, Working Together Coalition; Leslie Bouchonville, Pine River-Backus Family Center; Paul Jaeger, First National Bank of Walker; Renee Schwaller, community member; Sandy Munson, Walker/Hackensack/Akeley School District; and Jamie Richter, Renee Lukkason and Ane Rogers, Cass County Health, Human and Veteran Services.

St. Joseph's Foundation welcomes new board members

St. Joseph's Medical Center announced the recent election of David Downing, Kim Ellingson and Kevin Larson to St. Joseph's Foundation's Board of Directors.

Downing, Kinship Partners executive director, is a board member of RYFO Network and a member of Lakes Area Guys Network, a new program within Kinship Partners.

Ellingson, senior vice president and business banking manager at Bremer Bank Brainerd, serves on a number of other area community boards, including Brainerd Main Street Advisory Committee, Brainerd Lakes Area Childcare Coalition Committee, Trinity Children's Center and serves on the Brainerd Economic Development Authority.

Larson, chief executive officer/general manager for Consolidated Telecommunications Co. in Brainerd, serves on numerous industry and community boards and committees, including Minnesota Telecom Alliance past chairman of the board of directors, past board member of the Brainerd Lakes Chamber, chairman of the board for Pinnacle Publishing, board member of Independent Emergency Services and past president and current board member of the Brainerd Lakes Area Development Corp.

Raimann earns NCIDQ Certification

BAXTER - Sara Raimann, an interior designer and co-owner of The Hearth Room design showroom in Baxter, recently passed the National Council for Interior Design Qualification examination and earned the NCIDQ Certificate. The NCIDQ serves as a qualifier for professional membership within interior design organizations and demonstrates Raimann is qualified through education, experience and examination to competently practice interior design.Raimann is a graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Stout with a dual degree in interior design and interior decorating, and has been practicing interior design for nine years.

Baxter agents capture top awards

BAXTER - Keller Williams Realty Brainerd Lakes Market Center announced six of its associates received Medallion Awards for their production during 2009 at the company's annual convention in New Orleans in February.

Silver Award recipients are Mike Stanwood, Jody Fischer; Bronze Award recipients are Jamie Magness, Nikki Hirschey, Sunny Redding and Liz Timothy.

College to host Earth Day Fair, seeks exhibitors

Central Lakes College invites "green" exhibitors to reserve space for its Earth Day Fair and Living Green Expo from 9:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. April 22 at the Brainerd campus.

The Green Team and student Green Club are coordinating the free, public event, which includes a green job fair.

Among the registered exhibitors are agencies from county, state and local governments as well as private and non-profit businesses associated with wind energy, water resources, alternative fuels, and solar heating products and services.

A panel of six subject-matter experts will address the state of green initiatives, worldwide to local, in the cafeteria from 10 to 11 a.m., with moderator Cheryl Hills from the Region Five Development Commission. A question-answer period follows.

Third annual Purses for Partners planned

The third annual Purses for Partners, a luncheon and purse auction to benefit Kinship Partners, is planned April 24 in the Gull Lake Center at Grand View Resort.

Purse viewing and the silent auction will begin at 11 a.m. and lunch will be served at noon. Tickets are $25 each and are available by calling the Brainerd Kinship office at 454-8012 or (877) 730-5437. Purses will be auctioned and each purse will contain a special extra surprise gift from an area business. On the silent auction there will also be themed bags with accessories, such as a beach bag, a pet bag, a baby bag, and an ice cream bag among others.

WORKSHOPS

Real estate courses planned at CLC

Real Estate 3, the final course of the three-course principles of real estate series that is required as a prerequisite to obtaining the Minnesota Real Estate License, will be at Central Lakes College in Brainerd from 6 to 10 p.m., March 30-April 15 on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

The first four nights (15 hours) cover purchase agreements, closing procedures and financing. The last four nights (15 hours) cover real estate law.

Real Estate Continuing Education 1 will be simultaneously with real Estate 3. It covers purchase agreements, closing procedures and financing and earns 15 continuing education units. Bob Welch is the instructor for classes that are in the Business and Industry Center on the Brainerd campus.

Tuition is $225 for real Estate 3 and $112.50 for continuing ed.

OSHA general industry safety scheduled at CLC

Central Lakes College will host a 10-hour general industry OSHA workshop from 7:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on March 30 and 31 at the Business and Industry Center in Brainerd.

Participants who complete the training will receive a completion card from the OSHA Training Institute. The card states they have successfully completed the 10-hour OSHA course. CLC offers QuickBooks Pro accounting class

Central Lakes College has scheduled computerized QuickBooks Pro Accounting for Windows from 6-9 p.m., April 5 and 19 in Room C222 of the Brainerd campus.

The instructor is Jay Bock. The student will receive two college credits upon successful completion of the course.

'Investing in Your Business for Growth and Profit'

The Business and Industry Center on the Brainerd campus of Central Lakes College will host an eight-week course for business owners and managers to optimize profit.

Financial Management and Marketing Systems will be taught from 6-8:30 p.m. April 6, 13, 20, 27, and May 4, 11, 18, and 25. Jay Bock is the instructor.

The course is described as practical and hands-on, and it is personalized with individual assistance designed to help entrepreneurs who have experience running their business.

Participants will create a break-even analysis of the business and study the effect of different business decisions using break-even analysis. They will design a marketing strategy to create the desired business image.

'Going Into Business' planned April 8 at B and I Center

"Going Into Business For Yourself" will be offered from 6-9 p.m. April 8 at the Business and Industry Center on the campus of Central Lakes College, Brainerd.

This session covers all areas of business start-up, helpful advice on how to get your dream off the ground and stay profitable, including financing a new venture.

Follow-up counseling is available to qualified individuals from the Small Business Development Center's team of consultants at no charge to the individual. Tuition is $49 per person plus $29 for each additional business partner. Instructor is Jay Bock. Deadline to register is April 1.

'Serving It Safe' is April 8 in Brainerd

A 'Serving It Safe' review course will be 5 to 9 p.m. April 8 in the Business and Industry Center at Central Lakes College, Brainerd.

This course provides four hours of continuing education for certified food managers. It will address food sanitation and safety, emerging trends in food preparation and handling sanitation and prevention of food-borne illness.

Colette Pohlkamp is the instructor. Tuition is $70.

Diabetes care workshop planned April 8 at CLC

MerriLea Kyllo, registered nurse, certified diabetes educator, will lead a workshop for health-care nursing professionals on diabetes management April 8.

The workshop, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in C225 of the Brainerd campus, is for those who work in clinics, hospitals, nursing homes and home care. Fee is $35. Deadline to register is April 1.

Lakewood hosts national hospice teleconference

STAPLES - Lakewood Health System will host Hospice Foundation of America's 17th Annual Living with Grief Teleconference, titled "Cancer and End of Life Care."

The teleconference is scheduled 12:30-3 p.m. Wednesday at Lakewood Health System's Main Campus classrooms.

This year's conference will address care options related to cancer diagnoses, as well as loss and grief reactions for patients, families and professional caregivers. The teleconference will examine psychosocial aspects of cancer, pain management, and ethical issues. Discussion will focus on the complexities of professionals working with end-stage cancer patients and families when transitioning to hospice and palliative care from curative treatment, including how to employ effective communication skills, practices and protocols while also sensitively recognizing obstacles for the patient and family.

At the close of the teleconference, Lakewood Health System registered nurse and palliative care coordinator, Cindy Sauber, will lead a discussion on palliative care and take questions from the audience.

The teleconference is produced by Hospice Foundation of America, a not-for-profit organization, which acts as an advocate for the hospice concept of care.
