Trail system gets boost
BACKUS - Cass County Board Tuesday voted to give the city of East Gull Lake another $75,000 toward a five-phase multi-use trail system in that city, designed ultimately to connect with Baxter trails and the Paul Bunyan Trail.

The county earlier granted $100,000 toward the system and this year will match $75,000 the city allocated toward the trails.

Cass County's contribution will come from a trust fund generating interest income each year on the proceeds from the earlier sale of former state leased land the county sold. Principal from the sale must stay invested in the trust, but the county can use interest income to fund special projects.

These projects can include consolidating public land base, developing year-round destination trails, performing individual sewage treatment system audits and purchasing critical habitat. All projects must include local matching funds.

An initial loop of this trail system from Cass County State Aid Highway 77, south to Kavanaugh's was completed in 2006. The 2007 phase is proposed to run east from that loop to CSAH 70, then north to the Gull Lake Dam Recreation Area and east and north on Gull River Road to County Road 125. The County Road 125 ditch will be used to complete a loop to the Gull Lake Dam Recreation Area.

Cass commissioners voted Tuesday to create an assistant land commissioner position. The land department currently has eight forest resource manager positions. One of those will be eliminated when the assistant job is filled. The new position will be opened first to existing employees.

The board granted an easement across county-administered land to connect six private residential properties with a public road in the Christmas Point area south of Highway 371 near Walker.

Cass will seek Minnesota Department of Transportation approval to convey the east 210 feet of MnDOT's Shingobee gravel pit bordering Christmas Point Road to the county for use in constructing a recreational trail and parking area as a part of the Walker Bike Club project.
