Board pushing to repeal provisions
BACKUS - Cass County Board voted Tuesday to send letters to the Minnesota congressional delegation asking Congress to repeal provisions of the 2005 Deficit Reduction Act that cut federal funding to help local government units collect child support payments from non-custodial parents.
Those cuts are scheduled to take effect Oct. 1.
The program originally provided federal and state funding to help local units of government collect child support payments and distribute them to parents who have custody of children. Collecting child support from natural parents saves federal and state spending for child care provided under other programs, Health, Human and Veterans Services Director Dorothy Opheim noted.
Cass commissioners delayed taking a stand on the issue of whether the Legislature should extend truancy programs to cover children until their 19th birthday. If state funding accompanies the extension from age 18 to 19, the board likely will support it. If it would require counties to pay the extension costs, the board likely will not support the measure.
