Koering introduces bill that would prevent teachers from striking in future
Associate Editor Sen. Paul Koering, R-Fort Ripley, introduced a bill to classify all public kindergarten-12th grade teachers as essential employees, preventing them from striking in the future.
By changing the teachers' classification, Koering said in a news release, Minnesota would join 38 other states who do not permit public school teachers to strike.
Essential public employees who are prohibited from striking include the State Patrol, correctional institution guards, nurses and professional engineers. When an impasse is evident in contract negotiations with essential employees, the bargaining units and management use mediation and arbitration to resolve the differences.
Koering said he did not have a House author for the bill yet.
"Because of the recent Crosby-Ironton strike I felt compelled to offer this legislation -- the situation is literally tearing the community apart," Koering said in a statement. "Our children are our future and they should be our No. 1 concern, but instead currently 1,200-1,300 students are being deprived of their education."
