LOCAL BRIEFS Brainerd area priest delivers opening prayer in Minnesota Senate
Father Bill Skarich, who serves Brainerd area Catholic churches, delivered the opening prayer Monday in the Minnesota Senate.
He was recommended by Sen. Paul Koering, R-Fort Ripley.
Skarich serves the parishes of St. Francis, St. Mathias, St. Andrew's and St. Thomas of the Pines.
Driver improvement courses offered in Brainerd, Crosslake
The Minnesota Highway Safety Center will offer a 55+ four-hour refresher driver improvement course 9 a.m.-1 p.m. April 14 at the Crosslake Community Center, and 1-5 p.m. at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd.
The eight-hour full course will be offered 6-10 p.m. April 7-8 at Trinity Lutheran Church in Brainerd.
The courses are open to the public. Pre-registration is preferred but not required. A Minnesota Highway Safety and Research Center certified instructor will teach the class, including information on the latest visual scanning and steering techniques, anti-lock braking skills, airbag information, driver distraction, road rage and new vehicle technology.
People age 55 and older who complete the course qualify for a 10 percent discount on their auto insurance premiums for three years, according to Minnesota law.
First-time participants must complete two four-hour sessions. Repeat people are required to take the four-hour refresher course.
