LOCAL BRIEFS Public hearing to address proposal for electric transmission lines
BACKUS - The Minnesota Public Utilities Commission will host a public hearing at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Backus City Hall concerning a proposal to upgrade and run new electric transmission lines over 56 miles in Crow Wing, Cass and Hubbard counties.
Administrative Law Judge Richard Luis from the Minnesota Office of Administrative Hearings will conduct the hearing to receive public comment on the need for the proposed project.
He will submit a summary report from the hearing to the Public Utilities Commission, which the commission will use to help determine the need for the line. If the commission decides the high voltage transmission lines are needed, the utilities will apply for permits for the proposed route and further review and public hearings will follow, according to the commission's notice of hearing.
Medical examiner gives report on Cass '05 deaths
WALKER - Michael B. McGee, Ramsey County medical examiner and contracting medical examiner for Cass County, recently reported on the 2005 deaths in Cass County.
There were 78 deaths reported from Cass County in 2005, with 35 accepted for examination by the medical examiner and 43 released to a private physician who signed the death certificates.
There were 56 natural deaths reported, 11 caused by accidents, seven suicides, four homicides and one case of unidentified bones.
The medical examiner conducted a complete toxicology exam of 28 bodies, did an external exam with toxicology on one and signed six death certificates without an examination.
The medical examiner is required to review and approve all cremations. McGee approved 76 cremations for Cass County burials in 2005.
Army Corps of Engineers helps Emily on sewer line
EMILY - The U. S. Army Corps of Engineers, St. Paul District, will sign a project cooperation agreement with the city of Emily at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport.
The agreement between the Corps of Engineers and the city of Emily is to pay $400,000 for a portion of Emily's sanitary sewer collection system project. The Corps' funding will pay for constructing about 6,000 feet of sewer line within a right-of-way of Crow Wing County Road 1 in Emily. The project will take 18 months to complete.
Utilities commission to meet Tuesday
BAXTER - The Brainerd Public Utilities Commission will meet at 9 a.m. Tuesday at the BPU Service Center, 8027 Highland Scenic Road in Baxter.
