LOCAL BRIEFS Talk to offer help for children of soldiers
Becky Bontjes, a mental health therapist from Cornerstone who works with children, will provide insight into helping deployed soldiers' children deal with the separation.
Bontjes will talk to families at 7 p.m. Monday at the Brainerd Armory. The talk is sponsored by the Headquarters and Headquarters Company 1-194th Family Readiness Group. Bontjes was scheduled to speak last month but had to cancel.
Bontjes, who lived through a deployment when her husband was in Iraq, will speak for about a half-hour and then will have time for questions or families may visit with each other. Any branch of service is invited to the talk. Bontjes also will have materials and books and share ways to help children deal with a parent being gone.
Journey In Recovery of Nisswa will provide the families of deployed soldiers a meal at 5:45 p.m. Families are asked to RSVP. Child care also is available. The Family Readiness Group asks those in need of the services to RSVP with the number and ages of children so they can be prepared.
