Back then, their idea of fun was shooting rats in Baxter
Lauri Mustonen, 87, a first cousin of the World War II airman, spent a portion of each summer with Leo Mustnen. He was pleased that his cousin was able to be returned home.
As young boys, Lauri lived in Cloquet and Leo lived in Brainerd but the two would visit at each others' homes. Lauri Mustonen now splits his time between homes in Siren, Wis., and Texas.
While in Brainerd the two boys would travel to the city dump in Baxter and shoot rats with their rifles, Lauri Mustonen recalled.
"We used to look for girls," Mustonen said. "We never found one."
Lauri Mustonen, like his cousin, was a World War II veteran. Born in Finland, Lauri felt it was his duty to join the U.S. Navy. He said his cousin's plane crash in 1942 was unexplainable.
"When we were together we always had fun," Mustonen said.
