Campuses like Lundblad's experience
Staff Writer Central Lakes College's newly appointed president Larry Lundblad will be a perfect fit for the college.
That kept coming up Thursday when Lundblad was presented to the Brainerd and Staples campuses.
Ray Gildow, Staples, a community committee member of the CLC presidential search, and Wendy Schluender, CLC vice president of student affairs, were among those who said Lundblad would be a great fit for both campuses.
Gildow, who attended both presentations, said, "I think he'll do a great job. He has good people skills and he has exclusive skills involving all levels of decision making, which is one of the things we looked at. He brings a unique blend of technical and liberal arts background and that is what CLC is about."
Gildow, who retired as vice president of operations for the Brainerd and Staples campuses of CLC in 2004, said he has known Lundblad for more than 20 years. Gildow and Lundblad served in many of the same capacities in adult continuing education.
Schluender said she knew right away that Lundblad would fit perfectly with CLC. She said he has a great educational background and she is excited for him to come on board.
Brainerd Schools Superintendent Jerry Walseth had the same thoughts as Gildow and Schluender. Walseth, who was a community committee member on the presidential search, said in an earlier telephone interview that Lundblad will be a perfect fit for the college. He said Lundblad understands a variety of issues, including the faculty side of CLC as well as the career and technical sides of the college.
"He has many experiences on working with business partnerships and with school districts," said Walseth. "I'm looking forward to having Larry here and I'm excited about the endless possibilities of working together to do the things we need to get done."
Carol Tulikangas, CLC associate vice president of academic affairs and selection committee member, said Lundblad has a strong background in the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities system, so he knows the policies and rules on how things work at colleges in Minnesota. Tulikangas said this was one of the important qualities the committee was looking for in the next CLC president.
Nancy Paulson, CLC human resources director, said, "We're extremely excited for our new president. Larry is a well respected person in the MnSCU system. We're very lucky to have him here. He will be able to help move this college forward."
Teri Duff, CLC college lab assistant in Staples, said the overall reports she heard about Lundblad have been great. She said he will have big shoes to fill, referring to Joe Opatz, who has served as interim president since July 2005.
Several students in the heavy equipment class in Staples attended the presentation to find out more about the new president. Aaron Struck and Marshall Berthiaume, both of Staples, said they heard good things about Lundblad, but said they never met him.
