New human resources director officially introduced to board CROW WING COUNTY BOARD Senior Reporter After six days on the job, Tamra Laska is still getting her feet wet in the government sector.
Tuesday, the newly appointed Crow Wing County human resources director was officially introduced to the county board.
Laska's work has all been in the private sector. Her most recent work experience was as vice president of human resources for Lund Food Holdings/Byerly's in Edina. Laska led the human resources practice for the multiunit retail operation with 5,000 employees. She worked for the company for 11 years and before that had 14 years of experience with Supervalu in Hopkins where she was director of employee services.
Crow Wing County has more than 400 employees. The county has not had a human resources director for years. Laska said she is familiar with building a human resources program and looked at this opportunity as a startup although not from scratch. Laska was impressed with the county's ground work in job postings, communication and with candidate applications.
She has the interesting task of putting together a process to find her new boss as commissioners seek a new county administrator for the departing Peter Herlofsky Jr. Laska has been meeting with department heads to get an idea about driving needs anticipated over the next five years. She also has a priority of a centralized orientation for new employees and has a easel-sized sticky note on her main-floor courthouse office wall outlining that goal.
So far, Laska said she has been most impressed with the great diversity of jobs within the county. While she has worked with thousands of employees, Laska said she has not had this kind of interesting range before as employees include engineers, attorneys and deputies.
Regardless of the position, Laska said her role will be in hiring, labor relations and the entire job experience for employees tackling such issues as job definitions and competitive pay.
