NASCAR, revamped Big Race highlight new season at BIR
By TROY GUNDERSON
Sports Writer
Brainerd International Raceway is getting back to its roots.
This year marks the first time in nine years the fastest road course in the midwest will host a professional road race when BIR hosts the NASCAR 300, a NASCAR AutoZone Elite Division, Midwest Series race Aug. 20-22.
"We wanted to bring professional road racing back to BIR," said Quick. "That's really where BIR started. It's a regional series that encompasses seven to eight states and is a graduating series to the Busch and Nextel series."
Besides earning series points, drivers will also have a shot at earning a part of the $100,000 purse. The finals on Sunday will feature 35-40 cars in a 60-lap, 180-mile race.
Also joining the NASCAR racers will be race ready Dodge Vipers, which will race independently, giving spectators round the clock action.
"They'll be racing on the fastest road course in the nation at BIR," said Quick. "With the one-mile straight they'll reach speeds of over 200 mph before entering our turn one. It can be intimidating for the drivers."

Last year's inaugural Big Race, an all-motorcycle drag race, didn't draw as many fans as Quick would've liked, so he tweaked the event.
For this year's Big Race, which is July 30-Aug. 1, BIR partnered with the All Harley Drag Racing Association, making the first two days a sanctioned points race. The final day will pit the AHDRA class winners against imports for a $50,000 purse.
With 350-400 racers in the AHDRA, Quick is optimistic that not only will the racers be at BIR, their fans will follow them as well.
"First year events are tough because you have to have a fine balance between promotion and getting the right sponsorships," Quick said. "We anticipate the partnering with the Harley Drag Racing that it will bring in a fan base of spectators. By placing a points race designation, it will really encourage racers that belong to that group to come and accumulate points."
"There's a learning curve. In our business there's a gamble."
Quick is also expecting Larry "Spiderman" McBride, the fastest man on two wheels, to be back at the Big Race. Last year McBride recorded a 5.883 atop his Top Fuel motorcycle, breaking his own world-record of 5.895.
Throw in the Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals, one of the biggest motorsports events in the Midwest that draws more than 100,000 fans, and Quick has reasons to be excited.
"As soon as Nationals ended last August," Quick said, "we were working on issues that evolve around that event. We're going into our 22nd NHRA National event. We're very fortunate to have a sponsorship with Lucas Oil. It takes a lot of work to put this event on but it's an exciting event to be a part of."
One thing Quick is especially excited about is having Ducati North America motorcycles as a title sponsor for the American Motorcycle Association Superbike Classic June 24-27.
As Quick points out, the new additions and changes for this season is all about doing what's best for everyone that comes through BIR's gates.
"We try to find a balance that's good for the track, good for the racers and good for the spectators as well," said Quick.
