Dubious milestone Strike hits 50 days, but it's still short of record set in 1981
Time marches on in the Crosby-Ironton teachers' strike that's either 50 days old or 33 days old depending on how you count the days.
By the calendar, Wednesday marks the 50th day of the strike. When actual work days missed are the criteria today marks the 33rd day.
Since the Feb. 9 start of the strike there were three weekdays during which school was not in session. They include Feb. 18, Feb. 21 and March 25.
The longest teachers' strike in state history was in the Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted School District in 1981. That strike was 58 days. Education Minnesota officials said they currently count the strike in terms of missed work days and they assume that's how it was done in 1981.
Neither the current Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted School District superintendent, George Ladd, nor his predecessor were in the district when that strike ended. Ladd said the strike is still a topic that's avoided when possible, even after more than two decades.
The Crosby-Ironton teachers' strike would tie the record for the longest strike on May 4 and break the record on May 5. May 11 is currently scheduled as the last school day for the Crosby-Ironton School District.
