Gazelka bill would let students keep eligibility
ST. PAUL -- Legislation introduced recently by Rep. Paul Gazelka, R-Brainerd, would allow students participating in Minnesota State High School League activities in another district during a teachers' strike to maintain their eligibility after the strike.
"This bill would give those students the opportunity to continue their athletic endeavors without penalty," Gazelka said in a statement. "With the growing situation in the Crosby-Ironton School District, I wanted to do what I could to help those student-athletes, as well as future student-athletes."
The bill would allow a student enrolled in a district that experiences a teachers' strike during the school year to remain eligible to also participate in non-athletic contests and tournaments in that district whether or not the student receives coaching. However, the student must agree to return to participate in the district that experienced the strike within five school days after the strike ends.
The bill is scheduled to be heard Friday in the House Education Policy and Reform Committee.
Current MSHSL bylaws don't allow for a mid-year transfer, Gazelka said.
